wife Anna, to whom he gave all the household goods she<br />

brought with her, and the imj)rovement <strong>of</strong> one-third <strong>of</strong> all<br />

his real and personal estate. To Augustine he ga\e land<br />

bounded S. E. and N. by the heirs <strong>of</strong> Jonathan Lewis, deceased<br />

; to Joseph and Samuel his house and orchard ; to<br />

Peter a house and one acre <strong>of</strong> land on the north side <strong>of</strong> the<br />

road; to Stephen and Benjamin all his lands m Gorham<br />

town ; to Joseph, Peter and Samuel all the rest <strong>of</strong> his real<br />

and personal estate, they paying debts, legacies, and allowing<br />

Augustine a convenient way to the landing "where I<br />

make oysters," and a place to land and dry fish ; to Benjamin,<br />

Martha and Priscilla £12 old tenor each ($5.33), and<br />

to Sarah and Thankful £2 each, a bed and other articles to<br />

be divided equally. His personal estate was appraised at<br />

£431, 16,9., 6p., and his real estate at £910, and his mulatto<br />

boy Tom at £()()—all I presume in old tenor currency,<br />

corn being appraised at £1 per bushel—that is 50 coppers<br />

equal to 44 cents.<br />

He was engaged in the fisheries, and the soccess ot*<br />

himself and sons was sung b}' some contemporar}' troubadour,<br />

whose verses are remembered though the name <strong>of</strong> the<br />

poet is forgotten. He married first, Sarah, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Samuel Cobb, Feb, 4, 1701-2, she died Jmiuary 14, 1742,<br />

and he married in 1747 his second wife, Anna Nickerson <strong>of</strong><br />

Chatham. He died May 15, 1748, aged 66, and is buried<br />

with his first wife in the old graVe-yard in Hyannis, where<br />

their son Samuel caused grave stones to be erected to their<br />

memory.<br />

Children <strong>of</strong> benjamin Bearse born in <strong>Barnstable</strong> :<br />

1. Martha, born 9th Nov. , 1702, married Antipas Lewis,<br />

Oct. 15, 1730.<br />

H. Augustine, born 3d June, 1704, married June 3,<br />

1728, Bethia, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Linnell, she died 7th<br />

Oct., 1743, aged 39, and he married Sept. 7, 1744,<br />

for his second wife. Thankful, widow <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel<br />

Bacon. He died June 2, 1751, aged 47, and his<br />

widow, Nov. 1774, aged 70. He resided at first at<br />

perhaps after his second marriage, with his<br />

wife at <strong>Barnstable</strong>. He was engaged in the whale<br />

and owned try-works which were sold after<br />

his death. He had seven children, all <strong>of</strong> whom are<br />
