SAMUEL JACKSON<br />

Was one <strong>of</strong> the first settlers in <strong>Barnstable</strong>. Mr. Deane says that<br />

he removed from Plymouth to Scituate. He joined Mr. Lothrop's<br />

church Feb. 25, 1637-8, and came to <strong>Barnstable</strong> in October, 1639.<br />

He built his house on the second lot east <strong>of</strong> Calves Pasture Lane,<br />

which contained eight acres, and is now owned by the heirs <strong>of</strong><br />

Thomas and Benjamin AUyn. On his removal from <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

in 1647, he sold his houselot to Capt. Samuel Mayo who resold it<br />

to Mr. Thomas Allyn, whose descendants are the present owners.<br />

Feb. 23, 1644-5, he was "excommunicated and cast out <strong>of</strong><br />

ye church for Lyeing and sundry suspitions <strong>of</strong> stealing, as pinnes<br />

which were John Russell's and divers other things from others."<br />

Jan. 31, 1646-7, "he acknowledged his evils, renewed his<br />

covenant, and was again received into church fellowship."<br />

Feb. 10, at night, 1646-7. Removed from <strong>Barnstable</strong> "to<br />

live at Scituate beeing necessitated thereunto."<br />

He married twice ; his first wife died <strong>of</strong> consumption at Scituate<br />

March 4, 1638. He married Nov. 20, 1639, Hester, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dea. Richard Sealis <strong>of</strong> Scituate, and a niece <strong>of</strong> Mr. Timothy<br />

Hatherly. After the death <strong>of</strong> his father-in-law "he succeeded<br />

to his residence." His son Jonathan was a soldier in Phillips'<br />

war, and received a grant <strong>of</strong> land for his services. Jonathan had<br />

an only son Jonathan- born in 1685, and daughters Sarah and<br />

Hannah. The second Jonathan married twice and had a daughter<br />

Sarah born in 1730, and Jonathan born in 1733. Jonathan<br />

third married in 1757 and had several children, among whom was<br />

the late Roland <strong>of</strong> Scituate, and Dea. Ward <strong>of</strong> Boston.<br />

Samuel Jackson was a freeman <strong>of</strong> the Colony in 1644, and<br />

died in 1682, aged 72 years.<br />

I. Ann, baptized in Scituate March 25, 1638, that being the<br />

first day <strong>of</strong> the year old style. It is stated in the record that
