39. II. Samuel, 2d Feb. 1670-1. He removed to Stonington,<br />

Conn., and was living in 1710.<br />

40. III. Bethia, latter end <strong>of</strong> March, 1673. She died 12th<br />

April, 1715, aged 32, according to her gravestones in West<br />

<strong>Barnstable</strong> churchyard.<br />

41. IV. Hannah, middle <strong>of</strong> May, 1675, married June 2, 1708,<br />

Benjamin Lewis. (See Lewis.)<br />

42. V. Jonathan, 15th Feb. 1677.<br />

43. VI. Ichabod, 28th Aug. 1680.<br />

44. VII. Gershom, 2d April, 1682.<br />

The above are all the children named on the town record<br />

but in the settlement <strong>of</strong> his estate, and in the will <strong>of</strong> Bethia in<br />

1715, and <strong>of</strong> Mercy in 1707, the following are also named, probably<br />

children <strong>of</strong> the second wife :<br />

47. X. Mercy. She died single in 1718, leaving £100 estate<br />

mostly in money. She names her sisters Sarah, Hannah<br />

Lewis, Mary and Abigail. Her brother Job, Thomas<br />

Crocker, Jr., Walley Crocker, Rev. Mr. Lord, and her loving<br />

cousin Joseph Lothrop, whom she appoints executor.<br />

Ensign John Hinckley died 7th Dec. 1709. Inventory by<br />

Joseph Smith and Daniel Parker Dec. 13, 1709. Real estate<br />

£431,10 ; personal, £200,15,4, and was sworn to by his widow<br />

Mary. His sons Ichabod and Gershom administered. His estate<br />

was divided to his wife Mary, eldest son Samuel <strong>of</strong> Stonington,<br />

Ichabod, Bethia, Hannah Lewis, Jonathan, Gershom, Job, Abigail,<br />

Mercy and Sarah.<br />

(17.) Samuel Hinckley, son <strong>of</strong> Gov. Thomas, called junior,<br />

to distinguish him from his uncle <strong>of</strong> the same name, resided at<br />

West <strong>Barnstable</strong>. His father in his will says he gave to him the<br />

greatest part <strong>of</strong> his great lot where his son built his house. The<br />

boundaries <strong>of</strong> his great lot are not on the record. It was probably<br />

a part <strong>of</strong> the tract at West <strong>Barnstable</strong>, known as the "Timber<br />

Lands." Samuel Hinckley, Jr., was not a prominent man. He<br />

married Nov. 13, 1676, Sarah, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Pope <strong>of</strong> Sandwich.<br />

His death is recorded with commendable particularity,<br />

"Sam'l Hinckley, son <strong>of</strong> Mr. Thos. Hinckley, deceas'd, ye 19<br />

March, 1697," new style I presume, aged 46 years, and his widow<br />

married Aug. 17, 1698, Thos. Huckins, 2d. This family residing<br />

remote from the principal settlements, and had few advantages for<br />

obtaining an education. The mother and her son Thomas signed<br />

with their marks Dec. 17, 1700. This family removed to Harwich<br />

and some <strong>of</strong> the members afterwards to Maine.<br />

Samuel Hinckley in his will dated March 12, 1696-7, gives
