as a juror, a surveyor <strong>of</strong> highways, and as one <strong>of</strong> the granters <strong>of</strong> the<br />

lauds at Suckincsset.<br />

As a church member he does not appear to have been intolerant.<br />

The fact that he was twice indicted for "entertaining strangers,"*<br />

indicates that he belooged to the liberal party, <strong>of</strong> which his frienda<br />

Cudworth, Hatherly and Robinson, and his son-in-law. Rev. John<br />

Smith, were prominent members.<br />

He married his first wife in England, and she and his four children<br />

came over with him. The names <strong>of</strong> his children are on the<br />

Custom House record ; but their names are omitted in the history <strong>of</strong><br />

the town <strong>of</strong> Sandwich, England^ from which Mr. Savage copied;<br />

Chitdren <strong>of</strong> Samuel Hinckley.<br />

Smith, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>, and had a large family. (See Smith.)<br />

4 III. Sarah, born in England, married by Mr. Prince Dec. 12,<br />

1649, to Elder Henry Cobb, and was his second wife. (See<br />

Cobb.)<br />

5 IV. Mary, born in England. It appears by her father's will<br />

that she married and had a family, and was living in 1662.<br />

6 V. Elizabeth, born in Scituate, baptized Sept. 6, 1635, married<br />

July 15, 1657, Elisha Parker. (See Parker.)<br />

7 VI. Samuel, born in Scituate, bap. Feb. 4, 1637-8, buried 'm<br />

<strong>Barnstable</strong> March 22, 1640-1, aged three years.<br />

8 VII. A daughter, born in Scituate, and buried in <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

July 8, 1640.<br />

9 VIII. Twins born in ) buried Feb. 6, 1640-1.<br />

Mrs. Sarah Hinckley died Aug. 18, 1656, and Samuel Hinckley<br />

married Dec. 15, 1657, for his second wife, Bridget Bodfish, widow<br />

<strong>of</strong> Robert <strong>of</strong> Sandwich.<br />

Samuel Hinckley died Oct. 31, 1662. In his will dated Oct. 8,<br />

1662, he gives to his wife Bridget the use <strong>of</strong> his house, a garden and<br />

some land ; his two cows. Prosper and Thrivewell, and "all the<br />

household stuff she brouarht with her." His daughters Susannah,<br />

Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth, are named, and he gives to each <strong>of</strong><br />

them and to each <strong>of</strong> their children, one shilling each. As Mr.<br />

Hinckley had a large property, the presumption is that he had given<br />

a dower to each <strong>of</strong> his daughters at the time <strong>of</strong> their marriage. He<br />

*"Entertaming strangers." "We are commanded to "entertain strangers," and are told<br />

that some have thereby "entertained angels unawares." By "strangers" our ancestors<br />

"Quakers," and thence the criminality <strong>of</strong> the act.
