Hall was probably right ; but he was nevertheless morally bound<br />

to fulfil the conditions <strong>of</strong> his bargain. He would not be morally<br />

bound to do an illegal or immoral act ; but he was bound in honor<br />

to restore money that he had obtained by an illegal contract, and<br />

the court rightly held that he was so responsible.<br />

Mr. Nathaniel Hall married before 1675, Ann, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Rev. Thomas Thornton <strong>of</strong> Yarmouth. There is no record <strong>of</strong> his<br />

children in Yarmouth or Hingham. In reply to my inquiries, I<br />

am informed that a family <strong>of</strong> the name settled early in Sussex,<br />

but my correspondent was unable to ascertain whether the Halls<br />

<strong>of</strong> that County were the descendants <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel.<br />

(1-6.) Mr. Gersham Hall, son <strong>of</strong> John, Sen., was a prominent<br />

man. He resided some time in Chatham, from which town<br />

he was a deputy to the Colony Court in 1791. He resided in Harwich<br />

most <strong>of</strong> his life, and was a useful and influential man during<br />

the early settlement <strong>of</strong> that town. He built the grist mill known<br />

as Hall's Mill, and his residence was in that vicinity. He married<br />

first Bethia, daughter <strong>of</strong> Edward Bangs. She died Oct. 15,<br />

1696, aged 54. For his second wife he married Dec. 7, 1696,<br />

Martha Bramhall <strong>of</strong> Hingham. She died July 2, 1733, aged 69<br />

years. He died Oct. 31, 1732, aged 85 years, and was buried in<br />

the Hall burying ground in Dennis, where he and his wives have<br />

monuments. The record <strong>of</strong> his family is lost. His children<br />

were : 1, Edward, who married twice, and died in Harwich Jan.<br />

22, 1727, and his widow Sarah married Aug. 12, 1728, Mr.<br />

Daniel Legg <strong>of</strong> Yarmouth. His children were : 1, Bethia, born<br />

Dec. 31,1709, married Andrew Clark, Jr., Aug. 20,1729; 2,<br />

Hannah, Feb. 1, 1711-12, marriedFeb. 22, 1728-9, TuUy Crosby;<br />

3, Mary, Oct. 15, 1714, married Nov. 28, 1734, Gershom Hall<br />

4, Edward, April 19, 1717, married, had a family, and died Feb.<br />

1797, aged 80 years; 5, Sarah, April 27, 1720, died young; 6,<br />

Patience, July 15, 1726.<br />

2. Jonathan Hall, son <strong>of</strong> Gersham, had by wife Hannah,<br />

Gersham, born Oct. 25, 1715, who married his cousin Mary.<br />

3. Samuel Hall, son <strong>of</strong> Gersham, born 1669, married Patience<br />

Rider Feb. 2, 1696-7. He died in Harwich Feb. 19, 1729-30,<br />

and his widow married Thomas Clark, Esq.<br />

4. Mercy Hall, daughter <strong>of</strong> Gersham, married John Chase.<br />

5. Bethia Hall, daughter <strong>of</strong> Gersham, married Kenelen<br />

Winslow.<br />

Capt. "William Hall, son <strong>of</strong> John Senior, removed to Mansfield,<br />

Conn. He bought June 24, 1695, a thousand acre right <strong>of</strong><br />

land in "Windham, now Mansfield. He died June, 11, 1727, aged<br />

76, and his wife Easter Feb. 19,1727. His children were: 1,<br />

Isaac, who married April 24, 1700, Sarah, daughter <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Reed <strong>of</strong> Windham, and had ten children ; 2, James, who married<br />

Mehitable "Wood Oct. 15, 1716, and had ten children ; 3, "William,
