died May 29th, 1721. 2d, he marvied J;m'y 7, 1724-5<br />

Wid. Hannah JRussell, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Joseph Paine, Esq.,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Harwich. She had previously married on the 20th <strong>of</strong><br />

Jan'y 1715-16, Philip Eussel). 'She died May 8, 1753<br />

aged 58, (the church records say "about 50.") 3d Mary<br />

Howland, Feb. 21, 1754. He was a captain, a man <strong>of</strong><br />

some property, and had the bump <strong>of</strong> self esteem largely<br />

developed. Notwithstanding his <strong>of</strong>ficial standing and his<br />

being junior to Dea. Samuel, he vvas always known as<br />

Scussion Sam, a nickname exceedingly mortifying to his<br />

dignity. He believed that his family was entitled to more<br />

respect than the other Bacon <strong>families</strong> and was <strong>of</strong>ten vexed<br />

because his neighbors thought otherwise. He had a habit<br />

<strong>of</strong> saying, "we \vill discuss that matter," hence his nickname.<br />

He resided in the house which was his father's<br />

and died Jan'y 29, 1770 aged 77. His children born in<br />

<strong>Barnstable</strong> were Sarah, Feb. 24, 1713-14, who married<br />

Jabez Linnell, Nov. 11, 1736; Oris, May 7, 1715, mar-<br />

ried Hannah Lewis Nov. 23, 1738, and died July 11,<br />

1773, without issue, and bequeathed his estate to his<br />

nephew, the late Mr. Oris Bacon ; Thomas, Oct. 23, 1716,<br />

married Desire Hallett Feb. 1, 1745 ; Susannah, Dec. 24,<br />

1718, married Nath'l Cobb De^ 14, 1738 ; Deborah, Dec.<br />

4, 1720, married Peter Pierce-'Nov. 12, 1741 ; Hannah,<br />

baptized Feb. 13, 1725-6, and Mary baptized July 26,<br />

1730. There are no descendants in the male line <strong>of</strong> Capt.<br />

Samuel Bacon now living in <strong>Barnstable</strong>. A great-grandson<br />

residing in AVisconsin has many. Oris Bacon, son <strong>of</strong> Oris<br />

died at Lima Centre, Wisconsin, Nov. 21, 1862, aged 85<br />

years, 7 months, 5 days.<br />

V. Jeremiah, born Oct. 2, "1694, married Abigail Parker<br />

(she married 2d, Nov. 10, 1732, Mr. Eliphalet Carpenter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Woodstock,) and had Prince June 15, 1720, and Jeremiah,<br />

Jan'y 14, 1723-4. The latter married Hannah<br />

Taylor April 23, 1750.<br />

VI. Joseph, born June 15. 1695, married Patience Annable<br />

1722, and had seven children. 1. Joseph born April 11,<br />

1723, married Mirian Coleman Dec. 13, 1750 ; 2. Desire'<br />

born Dec. 3, 1724, married Joseph Davis, Jr., Sept. 24,<br />

1745. 3. Jane, born Feb. 28 1727-8 married James<br />

Davis, Jr., Sept. 24, 1745. 4. Samuel, father <strong>of</strong> Robert
