To his brother Benjamin Davis he gave ten acres <strong>of</strong> land in the<br />

common field bought <strong>of</strong> Samuel Sargent, and other property, and<br />

to his sister Mercy Davis nearly all his moveable estate.<br />

He also ordered a part <strong>of</strong> the income <strong>of</strong> his estate to be kept<br />

in bank, and to be distributed to such <strong>of</strong> his relations <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Davis' as may fall under decay, and be in want either by sickness<br />

or lameness or other accident— proportioned according to their<br />

several necessities—until all is distributed.<br />

He appointed Benjamin Davis his executor. He died in 1718<br />

and Samuel assumed the trust, and though the estate was<br />

appraised at £481,17,10, it proved insufficient to pay the legacies<br />

in full. Samuel, before making a final settlement, remaved to<br />

to Connecticut. Some <strong>of</strong> the receipts call<br />

<strong>of</strong> New London, and others <strong>of</strong> Coventry.<br />

(10-3) Hannah, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Davis, married Jedediah<br />

Jones 18th March, 1681, and resided at Scorton, just within the<br />

bounds <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>. In the town records only Shubael, Simon,<br />

Isaac, Timothy and Hannah, are named born previous to 1695.<br />

(11-4) Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Davis, married in 1677,<br />

Benjamin Goodspeed, and had Mary Jan 10, 1677-8, who married<br />

•Ichabod Hinckley, and receipted for his wife's legacy. Nov. 24,<br />

1697, she married Ensign John Hinckley <strong>of</strong> West <strong>Barnstable</strong>. By<br />

her last husband she had no children.<br />

(12-5) Joseph, son <strong>of</strong> John Davis, married, March 28, 1682,<br />

Mary Claghorn, daughter <strong>of</strong> James. He resided at Chequaquet,<br />

and died about 1690. She died 1706.<br />

(13-6) Benjamin, son <strong>of</strong> John Davis, died unmarried in 1718,<br />

and his estate was divided among his brothers and sisters and their<br />

representatives then living: 1, to John Davis, (Samuel died in<br />

1711) ; 2, to heirs <strong>of</strong> Hannah Jones, deceased; 3, to heirs <strong>of</strong><br />

Mary Hinckley, deceased ; 4, to heirs <strong>of</strong> Joseph Davis, deceased,<br />

(Benjamin and Simon deceased) ; 5, to heirs <strong>of</strong> Dolar Davis<br />

6, to heirs <strong>of</strong> Jabez Davis ; 7, to Mary Davis; 8, to Timothy<br />

Davis ; and 9, to Ruth Linnell. Of the family <strong>of</strong> John Davis<br />

four were living in 1718, three had died leaving no issue, and five
