transported across the Cape. Oysters were at that ti-ne very<br />

abundant and Davis bought them, put up in barrels, <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Indians and others, and shipped them from Hyannis. In early<br />

times the "making <strong>of</strong> Oysters," as the packing <strong>of</strong> them is called<br />

in the will <strong>of</strong> Benjamin Bearse, was a considerable business.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> the Oysters packed were probably brought from the<br />

vicinity <strong>of</strong> Oyster Island.<br />

He also owned two acres <strong>of</strong> land on the west <strong>of</strong> his father's<br />

land, where the late Dea. Joseph Chipman lived, including the<br />

landing and the land around the water mill, which was then probably<br />

his property. On his land he had a dwelling house which<br />

stood where Mr. Maraspin's now does, corresponding in size and<br />

appearance to that built by Nathaniel Bacon which has been<br />

described. He also had a warehouse on this lot. He had<br />

twelve acres <strong>of</strong> land on the south-east <strong>of</strong> his father's, sold to<br />

John Bacon, Esq., and already described. He also bought <strong>of</strong><br />

Caleb Lumbard the easterly part <strong>of</strong> the great lot <strong>of</strong> Thomas<br />

Lumbard, with the house thereon. This was set <strong>of</strong>f to his widow<br />

as her dower, and was afterwards owned by the descendants <strong>of</strong><br />

Robert Davis.<br />

(2-1) John Davis, son <strong>of</strong> Dolar Davis, married by Mr.<br />

Prince, at Eastham, March 15, 1648, to Hannah, daughter <strong>of</strong> Mr.<br />

Robert Linnell <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>. He died 1703.<br />

Children horn in <strong>Barnstable</strong>.<br />

8. I. John, born 15th Jan. 1649-50, married three wives.<br />

9. II. Samuel, born 15th Dec. 1651, died unmarried 1711.<br />

10. III. Hannah, married Jedediah Jones.<br />

11. IV. Mary, born 3d Jan. 1753-4, married 1st, B. Goodspeed,<br />

1676, 2d, John Hinckley, Nov. 24, 1697.<br />

12. V. Joseph, born June 1656, married Mary Claghorn,<br />

March 28, 1682.<br />

13. VI. Benjamin, born June, 1656, died unmarried 1718.<br />

14. VII. Simon, born 15th July, 1658, died young, no issue<br />

probably.<br />

15. VIII. bolar, born 1st Oct. 1660, married 3d Aug. 1681,<br />

Hannah Linnell.<br />

16. IX. Jabez, married Experience Linnell, 20th Aug. 1689.<br />

17. X. Mercy, unmarried 1718.<br />

18. XI. Timothy, married Sarah Perry 1690.<br />

19. XII. Ruth, born 1674, married John Linnell 1695.<br />

(3-2) Nicholas Davis <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>, probably son <strong>of</strong> Dolar<br />

Davis, married, June 1661, Mary or Sarah. There is no record<br />

<strong>of</strong> his family on the <strong>Barnstable</strong> town records. He was drowned<br />

at Newport before Aug. 9, 1672.<br />

20. I. A child Feb. 1661-2.<br />

21. II. Simon, 1656, drowned Feb. 13, 1657-8.
