GENEALOGICAL NOTES OF BARNSTABLE FAMILIES. ^^85<br />

(33-6) Solomon, son <strong>of</strong> Capt. John, born June 24, 1715, was<br />

a merchant and resided in Boston. During the siege he removed<br />

his family to <strong>Barnstable</strong>. He was an intimate friend <strong>of</strong> Gov.<br />

Hancock. In 1791 he was dining with his Excellency in company<br />

with some <strong>of</strong> the rare wits <strong>of</strong> the day, John Kowe, Joseph Balch,<br />

and others, Mr. Davis made some witty remark, which induced<br />

Mr. Balch to say to him, "Well, Davis, you had better go home<br />

now and die, for you will never say as good a thing as that again."<br />

On his way home he was taken suddenly ill, and sat down on the .<br />

steps <strong>of</strong> King's Chapel, from whence he was removed to his hduse<br />

in the vicinity, where he shortly after died.<br />

Solomon Davis married Jan. 29, 175X), Elizabeth Wendell <strong>of</strong><br />

Portsmouth, N. H. She died at Plymouth Feb. 20, 1777, aged<br />

about 47. She was the mother <strong>of</strong> all his children. He married,<br />

Nov. 18, 1777, her sister Catharine Wendell,. who died April 7,<br />

1808, aged 66. He died June 6, 1791, aged 76.<br />

His children were : 1, John, born May 19, 1753 ; 2, Solomon,<br />

Sept. 25, 1754, died at sea Sept. 1789 ; 3, Edward, Dec. 18, 1765,<br />

died at sea Nov. 11, 1708 ; 4, Thomas, July 26, 1757, died at<br />

Falmouth, Eng., Oct. 10, 1775 ; 5, Elizabeth, Oct. 14, 1758, died<br />

Aug. 14, 1833. (She married Dr. David Townsend May 24, 178o,<br />

^d was the mother <strong>of</strong> Dr. Solomon Davis Townsend <strong>of</strong> Boston.)<br />

6, Mehitable, July 14, 1760, died Oct. 28, 1761 ; 7, Henry, Oct.<br />

8, 1761, died March 15, 1762; 8, Josiah, Sept. S4, 1763, died<br />

June 29, 1777, buried at <strong>Barnstable</strong>; 9, Isaac, April 2,1765,<br />

married Elizabeth Fellows, died Dec. 5, 1800, at Hartford, Conn,<br />

10, William, April 26, 1768, married Martha Harris, he died Sept.<br />

14, 1804, at Dorchester. Solomon Davis has descendants living<br />

in Boston, and other places, Gustavus F. Davis president <strong>of</strong> the<br />

City Bank, Hartford, Conn., is a descendant <strong>of</strong> Isaac Davis <strong>of</strong><br />

Boston and many others <strong>of</strong> note.<br />

Dr Solomon Davis Townsend <strong>of</strong> Boston, son <strong>of</strong> Elizabetii<br />

Davis, born March 1, 1793, married his cousin, a daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Edward Davis, and is now three score years and ten. He was<br />

consulting surgeon to the Massachusetts General Hospital fronl<br />

1835 to 1839, and Acting Surgeon frdm 1839. to 1863, when be<br />

tendered his resignation <strong>of</strong> the place he had so long and honorably<br />

filled. In the resolutions adopted by the Trustees <strong>of</strong> the Hospital,<br />

they expressed their high appreciation <strong>of</strong> his long, faithful and<br />

valuable, services, <strong>of</strong> his generous devotion to the interest <strong>of</strong> that<br />

institution, <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>essional skill, <strong>of</strong> his ability, sound judgment,<br />

assiduity and kindness, and his consistent and gentlemanly<br />

conduct.<br />

(34-6) Mehitable Davis, daughter <strong>of</strong> Capt. John, born in<br />

<strong>Barnstable</strong> Aug.. 10, 1717, was a remarkable woman, and deserving<br />

<strong>of</strong> especial note. She married four husbands, all men <strong>of</strong><br />

character, influence and respectability, namely :
