(28-8) Hon Daniel Davis, son <strong>of</strong> Joseph, born in <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

28th Sept. 1713, was Judge <strong>of</strong> Probate, and held other <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong><br />

trust and responsibility. He resided in the house afterwards<br />

occupied by his son Dr. John Davis and now owned by Daniel Cobb,<br />

a descendant in the female line. He was an active man, and an<br />

ardent patriot during the Revolution. He <strong>of</strong>ten represented the<br />

town in the General Court, was on committees, and performed<br />

much labor. As I have hjid occasion to remark in a former article,<br />

at the commencemeBt <strong>of</strong> the Revolutionary struggle, he was<br />

inclined to take sides with the radical portion <strong>of</strong> the whigs ; but<br />

was afterwards more conservative in his views. <strong>Barnstable</strong> had<br />

not a more devoted patriot than Daniel Davis. He married<br />

Mehitable, ' daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas Lothrop. The land on which<br />

Daniel Davis built his house, was a part <strong>of</strong> the original allotment<br />

to Joseph Lothrop, the father <strong>of</strong> Thomas. He married for his<br />

second wife, July 7, Mehitable Sturgis, noticed below. Hon.<br />

Daniel Davis died 22d April, 1799, aged 85 years, 6 months, and<br />

13 days.<br />

(29-1) Thomas Davis, son <strong>of</strong> Capt. John, born Oct. 1, 1706,<br />

married Nov. 17, 1726, Susannah Sturgis, daughter <strong>of</strong> Edward.<br />

He had a daughter Susy baptized in the East Church April 17,<br />

1737. He died April 9, 1738, and his widow married, Aug. 12,<br />

1739, Mr. Elisha Gray <strong>of</strong> Harwich.<br />

(30-2) John Davis, son <strong>of</strong> Capt. John, born Sept. 8, 1708,<br />

married, Feb. 5, 1720-30, Abigail Otis,.and second Anna Allen,<br />

March 23, 1736. He had sons. Josiah and John, and daughter<br />

Martha, baptized in the East Church April 25, 1742.
