33. Chipman, son <strong>of</strong> Samuel, married Elizabeth and had, at<br />

Portland, Nathan, January 7, 1732 ; and Andrew, March 27,<br />

1734.<br />

James Cobb, son <strong>of</strong> James and grandson <strong>of</strong> Elder Henry<br />

Cobb, born 8th July, 1673, resided on his grandfather's "great<br />

lot." He niarried 18th Sept. 1695, Elizabeth Hallett. She died<br />

April 1, 1759, aged 80. Their children born in <strong>Barnstable</strong> were :<br />

I. James, born 13th Sept. 1698, he married Hannah Rich <strong>of</strong><br />

Truro, May 14, 1724, and had 1, James, June 16, 1725,<br />

died Oct. following ; 2, Elizabeth, Saturday Oct. 29, 1726 ;<br />

3, Lois, Friday June 27, 1729 ; 4, Isaac, Tuesday Dec. 21,<br />

1731; 5, Ezekiel, Saturday Aug. 31, 1734; 6, Hannah,<br />

Wednesday, April 20, 1737 ; 7, Dinah, bap'd June 1, 1740 ;<br />

8, Deliverance, bap'd Sept. 19, 1742. Hannah, wife <strong>of</strong><br />

James Cobb, Jr., was dismissed from the church in <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

to the church in Truro, Jan'y 15, 1663-4, and probably<br />

the family removed to that town.<br />

II. Sylvanus, born 25th Nov. 1700, married Mercy Baker,<br />

Nov. 7, 1728. He died Sept. 30, 1756, aged 55. His<br />

children born in <strong>Barnstable</strong> were, 1, Mercy, Oct. 13, 1729,<br />

married James Churchill, Jan'y 10, 1751, died Sept. 25,<br />

1756; 2, Ebenezer, Aug. 13, 1731, married 1754 Lydia<br />

Churchill <strong>of</strong> Middleboro', and had .James and Ebenezer<br />

3, Sylvanus, Feb. 18, 1734-5, died May 10, 1737 ;<br />

nie, Jan'y 23, 1736-7; 5, Rebecca, April 2, 1739, died<br />

Aug. 17, 1756, aged 17; 6, Sylvanus, July 21, 1741 ; 7,<br />

Thankful, bap't Sept. 25, 1743 ; 8, Lydia, bap'd Jan'y 5,<br />

1745-6. From this family I am informed that Rev. Sylvanus<br />

Cobb is descended.<br />

III. Elisha, born 24th Dec. 1702, married Mary Harding, <strong>of</strong><br />

Trm-o, Feb. 25, 1724-5.<br />

IV. Jesse, born 15th<br />

Jan'y 1, 1733-4.<br />

April, 1704, married Thankful Baker,<br />

She died May 6, 1742, and he died Dec.<br />

1777, aged 72. His children born in <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

Joseph, born 22d Sept. 1734, who married Desire<br />

were<br />

Lumbard<br />

and had Thankful Nov. 14, 1757 ; Remember-Mercy,<br />

Jan'y 13, 1760, and Joseph, Aug. 18, 1762, (the father <strong>of</strong><br />

the present Mr. James Cobb). The daughters Thankful<br />

and Mercy it is said were bewitched when young, and<br />

marvelous stories are related <strong>of</strong> them. Jesse Cobb had<br />

also Seth, bap'd Sept. 4, 1737, removed to Sandwich<br />

Rowland, bap'd Oct. 15, 1738, married Thankful Garret <strong>of</strong><br />

S. ; Nicholas, bap'd Feb. 10, 1739-40, married Ann Perry<br />

had Chloe Blush now living, aged 96, and others ; Nathan<br />

bap'd Jan's 18, 1740-41. Jesse Cobb was an illiterate<br />

man. He could neither read or write ; but he considered<br />

himself a great poet and employed an amanuensis. His<br />
