ter Abigail, he owed the Department thirty dollars when his<br />

tiiiccessor was appointed. This sum was laid aside to be<br />

paid over when called for. Subsequent investigation proved<br />

that Doctor Bourne's accounts were right. His property<br />

was wrongfully taken from him, and he did not live till it<br />

was rectitied.<br />

Justice to Doctor Richard Bourne as an honest and<br />

honorable man, requires this correction to be made, and<br />

those who preserve tiles <strong>of</strong> my papers are requested to note<br />

this fact in the margin <strong>of</strong> No. 28, that the money was subsequently<br />

refunded by the Post Office Department.<br />

He died in <strong>Barnstable</strong> April 25, 1826, aged 86 years.<br />

His wife died in <strong>Barnstable</strong> March 5, 1826, aged 85 years.<br />

I. Capt. Richard Bourne, a son <strong>of</strong> Melatiah, born Aug.<br />

13, 1695, was an <strong>of</strong>ficer in the army, and distinguished<br />

himself at Norridgwalk. He settled in Falmouth, whei'e<br />

he died in 1738, leaving no issue.<br />

II. John Bourne, son <strong>of</strong> Melatiah, born March 10, 1698,<br />

married March 16, 1722, Mercy, daughter <strong>of</strong> Joseph<br />

Hinckley <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>. He removed to Falmouth and<br />

had Joseph, John, David, Thomas, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth<br />

and Mary. All the sons, excepting Thomas, married<br />

and had <strong>families</strong>. Mr. John Bourne, the father <strong>of</strong><br />

this family, died early in life, leaving a good estate.<br />

III. Shearjashub, son <strong>of</strong> Melatiah, born Dec. 21, 1699. He<br />

received his degrees at Harvard College in 1720, and<br />

was ordained pastor <strong>of</strong> the First Church in Scituate,<br />

Dec. 3, 1724. He married 1725, Abigail, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Rev. Roland Cotten <strong>of</strong> Sandwich, and had Elizabeth,<br />

1726 ; Abigail, 1727 ; Desire, 1728 ; Bathsheba, 1730 ;<br />

Shearjashub in 1732, who died young. His first wife<br />

died in 1732, and he married in 1738, Sarah Brooks <strong>of</strong><br />

Medford, by whom he had one son, Shearjashub, born<br />

in 1739. His second wife died in 1742, and he married<br />

in 1750, Deborah Barker, by whom he had one son,<br />

Roland, born the same year. His third wife died in<br />

1750, and he married in 1757, Joanna Stevens <strong>of</strong> Roxbury.<br />

He was a man <strong>of</strong> feeble constitution, and depressed<br />

and melancholy spirits. In 1755, his health was<br />

impaired by a paralytic affection. He tendered his<br />

resignation <strong>of</strong> the pastoral <strong>of</strong>fice, and Aug. 6, 1761,
