legacies. He gave his cane to his eldest grandson, Melatiah,<br />

and his clock to his son Silas. Names his son S3^1vanus<br />

gave to his son John and grandson Joseph, his lands in<br />

Falmouth. He gave legacies to his daughter Bathsheba<br />

Euggles and to each <strong>of</strong> the children she had by her late<br />

husband, William Newcomb. He orders his negro man Nei'o<br />

to be manumitted. Children <strong>of</strong> Hon. Melatiah Bourne :<br />

VI. Shearjashub, Dec. 21, 1699, married four wives.<br />

VII. Silas, Dec. 10, 1701, married Allen.<br />

VIII. Bathsheba, Nov. 11, 1703, married William Newcomb;<br />

second, Timothy Ruggles, 1736.<br />

Hon. Sylvanus Bourne, son <strong>of</strong> Melatiah, <strong>of</strong> Sandwich,<br />

born Sept. 10, 1694, married in 1717, Mercy, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Col. John Gorham <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>. In 1720, he was an inhabitant<br />

<strong>of</strong> Falmouth, but soon after removed to <strong>Barnstable</strong>,<br />

where he resided till his death. He bought the estate which<br />

was Mr. James Whippo's, who removed to Boston in 1708.<br />

Mr. Thomas Sturgis, who died that year, bought this estate<br />

for his son Edward ; but it passed not many years after into<br />

the possession <strong>of</strong> the Bourne family, in which it continued<br />

about a century.<br />

He inherited a good estate from his father, and his Avife<br />

belonged to one <strong>of</strong> the most wealthy <strong>families</strong> in <strong>Barnstable</strong>.<br />

In early life he was a merchant, and engaged in commercial<br />

business, in which he was successful, and became<br />

wealthy. He was a Colonel <strong>of</strong> the militia, many years one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Governor's Council, Register <strong>of</strong> Probate, and after<br />

the death <strong>of</strong> his father in 1742, was appointed Judge <strong>of</strong><br />

Probate.<br />

He died in 1764. In his will, dated May 20, 1763, he<br />

names hig sons Melatiah, to whom he gives £66.13 : William,<br />

£133.6.8; and Richard, £133.6.8. To each <strong>of</strong> his<br />

five daughters, namely, Desire Clap, Mary Stone, Hannah<br />

Hinckley, Mercy Jordan and Eunice Gallison, £66.13.4<br />

each. He also gives legacies to his grand-children Reuben,
