great changes by his stern <strong>in</strong>tegrity, perseverance, and <strong>in</strong>dustry. Whatever measures he<br />

reported, the Congress were quite sure to adopt. He was at the head of the Treasury Department,<br />

and super<strong>in</strong>tendent of the build<strong>in</strong>g of the Wash<strong>in</strong>gton Monument, as far as that work<br />

was completed, prior to the War of the Union. He spent the most of his life <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />

D. C. His death occurred <strong>in</strong> 1S65. On a preced<strong>in</strong>g page is an engrav<strong>in</strong>g of him.<br />

Hon. Elisha IVIiitttesey may have been related to William Whittlesey, the .Archbishop of<br />

Canterbury, who was primate of all England from 136S to his death, <strong>in</strong> June, 1374. This<br />

relationship, however, has not been traced.<br />

Joh.n'^ Cogswell, (Ec/i.'ardK WiUia<strong>in</strong>\ Williaur, Jolui^), son of<br />

i Edward i 23 and Hannah (Brown) Cogswell, was born April 5, 1721,<br />

<strong>in</strong> Ipswich, Mass. He married Sarah Fireman. It is said that they<br />

resided <strong>in</strong> Vermont.<br />

John Coc.swei.l was a farmer. To what place he removed <strong>in</strong> Vermont and his subsequent<br />

history are unknown. <strong>The</strong>re was a John Cogswell, who died Sept. 9, 17S7, <strong>in</strong> the siMy.<br />

seventh year of his age, and was buried <strong>in</strong> Chebacco Parish, Ipswich, Mass., who may have<br />

been identical with the above named.<br />
