Jonathan Cogswell <strong>in</strong>herited the Co,:^swell lio<strong>in</strong>e.stead. He was com-<br />

missioned Justice of the Peace. Oct. 26. 1733. His commission, bear<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

signatures of the Prov<strong>in</strong>ce officers, is still <strong>in</strong> existence ; also a volume, heavily<br />

bound, which as a magistrate he often consulted, entitled " Acts and Laws of<br />

His Majesty's Prov<strong>in</strong>ce of the Massachusetts Bay, <strong>in</strong> New England, Passed by<br />

the Great and General Court <strong>in</strong> Assembly of the Massachusetts Bay, Published<br />

1726." <strong>The</strong> date of the most ancient enactment was 1692. It is said that<br />

Jonathan Cogswell. Esc| , built the house <strong>in</strong> which the late Adam Boyd resided.<br />

<strong>The</strong> stone that marks the grave of Mrs, Cogswell is thus <strong>in</strong>scribed : " Here<br />

lyes ye body of Mrs. Hannah Cogswell, wife to Mr. Jonathan Cogswell, Dec'd<br />

June yc i8il>. 1723, In the 32'' year of her age." <strong>The</strong> stone that marks his<br />

grave bears this <strong>in</strong>scription " : Here lies Buried the Body of Jonathan C' '<br />

our I'eace <strong>in</strong> the County of F^sse.v, with<strong>in</strong> our I'rov<strong>in</strong>cc of the .Mas.sachusetts Kay^ <strong>in</strong> .New<br />

F^ngland ; and to keep and cause to be kept the- )aw< .<strong>in</strong>d ord<strong>in</strong>ances made for the good of the<br />

I'eace and for the Conservation of the same, and for the quiet Kulc and Covernmcnt of our<br />

people <strong>in</strong> the .said County, <strong>in</strong> all and every the article> thereof, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the force, Form,<br />

and effect of the sa"nic ; and to chastise and I'unish all Persons offend<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st the Form of<br />
