ried <strong>in</strong> 1858, and the follow<strong>in</strong>g year remo\ed to Halifax, N. S., and formed a<br />

partnership with Dr. Lawrence E. Van Buskirk, a successful practitioner of<br />

dentistry <strong>in</strong> that city. After two years Dr. Van Buskirk retired, from ill<br />

health, and soon after died. Dr. Cogswell, <strong>in</strong> 1867, formed a partnership<br />

with Dr. J. L. Mackay, which cont<strong>in</strong>ued for two years, when Dr. Cogswell<br />

repaired to Philadelphia, and was <strong>in</strong> attendance at the Dental College <strong>in</strong> that<br />

city until he received the degree of D. D. S. He then returned to Halifax,<br />

N. S., and had for many years a large and lucrative practice. Dr. Cogswell<br />

wrote some valuable papers on subjects connected with dentistry, which were<br />

published. Dr. Cogswell's residence was across the harbor <strong>in</strong> the town of<br />

Dartmouth. He was Councillor of the municipality where he resided, an<br />

Elder <strong>in</strong> the St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church, and the President of the<br />

Society for the Relief of the Poor.<br />

Alfred R. Cogy.i;-II [ 2432 ], the elder son of Dr. Cogswell, was a Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer,<br />

and resided <strong>in</strong> Lidell, Xapa Co., Cal.<br />

Aitliur W. Coifs-uh-!/ [2433], the younger son, <strong>in</strong> 1SS4, received the degree of M, 1)., and<br />

was appo<strong>in</strong>ted the Surgeon of the Halifa.\ Prov<strong>in</strong>cial and City Hospital.<br />
