" one half of the Iron Works <strong>in</strong> New<br />

Milford, Xorth Purchase, stand<strong>in</strong>g on a stream called Aspetuck . . . with all the appurte-<br />

nances, privileges, and accommodations belong<strong>in</strong>g thereunto, with the privilege of the iron ore.<br />

as I, said Edward Cogswell, have of Elisha Williams and Mart<strong>in</strong> Kellogg." From which il<br />

appears that Edward Cogswell and his brother-<strong>in</strong>-law, Matthew Whipple, carried on the first<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> that part of New Milford.<br />

Martha Deiiisoii, Matthew Whipjjle's mother, was a daughter of John Denison, who was<br />

the only son of Major Daniel Denison. Martha Denison married 'Thomas Wigg<strong>in</strong>, a grandson<br />

of Gov. Thomas Wigg<strong>in</strong>, also of Gov. .Simon Bradstreet. .She married, July, 1693, ^Capt.<br />

Jonathan Th<strong>in</strong>g, of Exeter, N. H., who died Oct. 30, 1694. <strong>The</strong>y had one son, Daniel, born<br />

May 12, 1694. She then married 'Major .Matthew Whipple. <strong>The</strong> "wife of Maj. Matthew<br />

Whipple, Esq., died Sept. 12, 172S, <strong>in</strong> ye 60th year of her age."<br />

Ca/'t. Jonathan Th<strong>in</strong>g's first wife was Marv Gilman. <strong>The</strong>v had two sons, Edward and<br />

Moses Th<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Emerson^ Cogswell, {Williatii^, Willianr, yoltn^), son of William^<br />

141 and Martha (Emerson) Cogswell, was born 1700. <strong>in</strong> Chebacco,<br />

Ipswich, Mass. He married, Dec. 30, 1736, Mary Pecker, daughter of<br />

Capt James and Mrs. Bridget (Papillion) Pecker. She was born <strong>in</strong><br />

Boston. <strong>The</strong>\- resided <strong>in</strong> Ipswich and Boston, and subsequently <strong>in</strong><br />

Concord, Mass., where Mr. Cogswell died, March 29, 1788. Mrs.<br />

Cogswell died Dec. 23, 1795.<br />
