WiLLi.^M Cables Cogswell <strong>in</strong> early life became restive, and longed for<br />

other fields of action than the bleak hills of his native town. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

he quietly packed his scanty wardrobe <strong>in</strong> a small bundle, and with only one<br />

dollar and seventeen cents <strong>in</strong> his pocket, Jan. 14, 1840, he left home and<br />

bent his steps towards the sett<strong>in</strong>g sun. At the end of three days' journey, he<br />

found himself many miles from home, and his little funds exhausted. He<br />

stopped for lodg<strong>in</strong>g at a farm-house, and <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g barga<strong>in</strong>ed his services<br />

with the farmer for n<strong>in</strong>e months at n<strong>in</strong>e dollars per month. Hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fulfilled this term of service, without a s<strong>in</strong>gle day of lost time, he received his<br />

wages, and with eighty-one dollars <strong>in</strong> his purse felt himself f<strong>in</strong>ancially <strong>in</strong>de-<br />

pendent. He ne.xt turned to good account his common-school education by<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g; this he pursued for several years. He then entered upon trade.<br />

and for twenty-eight years kept a village store. In 1882 he retired upon a<br />

small farm with a competency.<br />

Mr. Cogswell was a highly respected <strong>citizen</strong>, and called to fill various<br />

public offices. For twenty-two years he was Postmaster. He was chosen<br />

President of the Village Corporation of Wurtsboro'. In 1SS3 he was elected<br />

one of the Supervisors of Sullivan Co., N. Y., and re-elected without an<br />

oppos<strong>in</strong>g vote <strong>in</strong> 1SS4.<br />
