John"' Cogswell, Cyolur, y//n^), son of John'-' I4' Cogswell, was<br />

born 1650, <strong>in</strong> Chebacco, Ipswich, Mass. He married, July 22, Margant<br />

GifforJ, daughter of Dr. John Gifford, of Lynn, Mass. <strong>The</strong>y lived <strong>in</strong><br />

Ipswich, Mass. Mr. Cogswell died <strong>in</strong> 1724. Mrs. Cogswell survived<br />

her husband.<br />

Mr. Cogswell, go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> pursuit of hostile bands of Indians, was captured<br />

by them. How long he was held a captive and the manner of his escape are<br />

not known. Some time <strong>in</strong> 1675 he brought suit aga<strong>in</strong>st his uncle, William<br />

Cogswell, giv<strong>in</strong>g rise to the famous case of Cogswell vs. Cogswell before men<br />

tioned. <strong>The</strong> case was f<strong>in</strong>ally decided, May 29, 1677, <strong>in</strong> favor of the defendant,<br />

after se\eral trials, and Mr. Cogswell was obliged to pay costs of £\}, ^s.<br />

Mr. Cogswell left a will, dated Sept. 16, 1713. which was proved Aug. 31<br />

1728. In his will he mentions his wife Margaret, three sons, and six daughters<br />

Mrs. Cogswell's father. Dr. Gifford, was the agent for the iron works <strong>in</strong> Saugus<br />

and owned a farm <strong>in</strong> that vic<strong>in</strong>ity.<br />

born <strong>in</strong> Chebacco, Ipswich, Mass. He married, Oct. 27, 1668, Sus/i/ij<br />

Haven, daughter of Richard and Susanna (Newhall) Haven. She was<br />

born <strong>in</strong> .Sa)brook, ConiL, where they lived. Mr. Samuel Cogswell died<br />

prior to 1701.
