daughter of Nelson and Maria Scofield. She was born Dec. 14, 1837,
in Stamford, Conn. They resided in San Francisco, Cal.

.Association. Dr. Cogswell, in May, 1S5S. led a party prospecting for gold through the valley
of the Voiiemite, along the river Tuolumne ; and to him belongs the honor of discovering,
while on that expedition, the famous grove of the l!ic. Trees in that region. .Some of these
