Joseph Hubert Cogswell served as Capta<strong>in</strong>, Major, Lieutenant-Colonel,<br />

and Brevet-Colonel <strong>in</strong> the One Hundred and Fiftieth Regiment New York<br />

Volunteers, <strong>in</strong> the War of the Union. His military career commenced Sept. 6,<br />

1S62, and term<strong>in</strong>ated only with the end of the war <strong>in</strong> 1865. He was appo<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

by President Grant, Postmaster <strong>in</strong> Titusville, Pa., May 6, 1869, and hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

been reappo<strong>in</strong>ted three times by succeed<strong>in</strong>g Presidents, still held the office<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1884. Col. Cogswell was a pr<strong>in</strong>ter and publisher. He published the Titus-<br />

ville Herald for several years. His brother-<strong>in</strong>-law, William H. Fowler, Esq.,<br />

was the Manager and Secretary of the Gas Works <strong>in</strong> Titusville. Col. Cogswell<br />

and his sister, the only surviv<strong>in</strong>g children of Samuel O. Cogswell, <strong>in</strong> memory<br />

of their father, and <strong>in</strong> respect for his birthplace, presented at its dedication, <strong>in</strong><br />

18S3, a fitt<strong>in</strong>g memorial to the new Congregational Church of Richmond, Mass.<br />

War from .\ to Z. This Revolutionary patriot had five grandsons <strong>in</strong> the War of the Union,<br />

three of whom filled soldiers' graves. Col. Cogswell <strong>in</strong> a letter dated M.-iv g, iSSi, wrote:<br />

" I have not a Cogswell relative <strong>in</strong> the world that I know of, except my immediate family."<br />

Gcorgf K. Harley, son of James 1'. and Emily (Kimball) Harley, who married .Mice H.<br />

Cogswell [ 2144 ], was a Broker <strong>in</strong> Tetroieum.<br />

Joseph H. Cogswell [ 2145 ] removed, May. iSSi, to .Arizona Territory; was Deputy Sheriff<br />

of Cochise Co., and Postmaster <strong>in</strong> Tombstone, where he resided. In iS,S3, he took up a ranchc<br />

<strong>in</strong> San Simon V.iilev, .Arizona.<br />
