Cogswell, was born Nov. iS, 1S25, <strong>in</strong> Henniker, N. H. He<br />

married. May 17, 1855, Mary SniitJi Pi/'sbury, daughter of Oliver and<br />

Mary (Smith) Pillsbury. She was born Feb. 28, 1823, <strong>in</strong> Henniker,<br />

N. H., where they resided. <strong>The</strong>y had no children.<br />

Le,\nder W. (\)GSwell was educated at the .Academy of his native town.<br />

He went to California <strong>in</strong> 1S49 and returned <strong>in</strong> 1854. Mr. Cogswell engaged<br />

<strong>in</strong> mercantile bus<strong>in</strong>ess, and afterward was Route Agent on the New Hampshire<br />

Centra] Railroad. He enlisted as a soldier of the Union Army, Aug., 1862,<br />

Company D, Eleventh Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers, and Sept. 4,<br />

1862, was commissioned Capta<strong>in</strong> of the same company. Capt. Cogswell, Aug.<br />

20, 1S64, received the commission of Lieutenant-Colonel, and was on the staff<br />

of Major-Gen. S. G. Griff<strong>in</strong>, with the rank of Colonel. Col. Cogswell followed<br />

the fortunes of the N<strong>in</strong>th .Army Corps for nearly three years, clos<strong>in</strong>g his term<br />

of service April 26, 1S65. hav<strong>in</strong>g shared its marches, sieges, perils, and mem-<br />

orable battles.<br />

Col. Cogswell represented the town of Htnniker <strong>in</strong> llie .State Legislature<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1866. 1867, 1S70. and 1S71. He was State Treasurer <strong>in</strong> 1S71 and 1S72.<br />

and Bank Commissioner 1876 to iSSo. He was made a Justice of the Peace<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1876, and held various municipal offices. He was elected a member of the<br />

New Hampshire Historical Society, was chosen President of the New Hamp-<br />

shire .Antiquarian Society, and received high Masonic iionors.<br />

Col. Cogswell was the .Author of tlie History of Henniker, N. H.. a volume<br />

of several hundred pages, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a large amount of most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g local<br />

histon,-. He also rendered valuable assistance <strong>in</strong> furnish<strong>in</strong>g genealogical data<br />

for this volume.<br />
