family of Mr. Emer.son have <strong>in</strong>herited. Edward Emerson was a cous<strong>in</strong> of Martha Emerson,<br />

who married William Cogswell, the cous<strong>in</strong> of Rebecca Waldo. From Rebecca Waldo, Mr.<br />

Emerson derived his middle name and his descent from John Cogswell, [ i ] of Ipswich,<br />
