was born Au.s;. 15, 1790, <strong>in</strong> Lans<strong>in</strong>gburg, N. Y. She married, Oct. 29,<br />

(Douglas) Sloane. He was born May 9, 1785, <strong>in</strong> Williamstown, Mass.,<br />

where they resided. Mr. Sloane died Sept. 15, 1839, '1 New Albany,<br />

Ind. Mrs. Sloane died Jan. 9, 1870, <strong>in</strong> New York City.<br />

"Mari.4 Cogswell was the only daughter of Samuel and Mary {Backus)<br />

CogsweU. Her father was a merchant, resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the town of Lans<strong>in</strong>gburg,<br />

Rensselaer Co., N. Y. While yet an <strong>in</strong>fant, hav<strong>in</strong>g seen scarcely more than a<br />

week of life, a terrible tragedy, the result of what we call accident, but which<br />

was purely a mysterious and <strong>in</strong>scrutable i^rovidence, the un<strong>in</strong>tentional discharge<br />

of a loaded gun. <strong>in</strong> the hand of an <strong>in</strong>timate and valued friend, <strong>in</strong> a moment<br />

bereaved .Maria of a lov<strong>in</strong>g father, and prematurely made her mother a deeply<br />

afflicted widow. <strong>The</strong> suddenness of the blow, under the try<strong>in</strong>g circumstances<br />

<strong>in</strong> which it occurred, almost bereft the young mother of reason. But the force<br />

of a nature of s<strong>in</strong>gular strength and fortitude, and susta<strong>in</strong>ed by the power of<br />

an unquestion<strong>in</strong>g faith <strong>in</strong> the goodness of a covenant-keep<strong>in</strong>g (Jod, carried<br />

her through the try<strong>in</strong>g ordeal. After two years, the hand of the widow was<br />

sought and won by an early lover. Rev. Erenezer Fitch, the first President<br />

of Williams College. He became to Maria a most tender and lov<strong>in</strong>g parent,<br />

supply<strong>in</strong>g as far as it was possible by gentle m<strong>in</strong>istrations and assiduous<br />

culture and <strong>in</strong>structions, the place of her natural father. Under such care<br />

and cultivation, Maria developed not only a s<strong>in</strong>gularly graceful and beautiful<br />

person, but a graceful and vigorous <strong>in</strong>tellect, choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ctively the most<br />

<strong>in</strong>structive as well as the most elevat<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g authors of the day, and<br />

draw<strong>in</strong>g not from the too often shallow founta<strong>in</strong>s, which dist<strong>in</strong>guish much of
