well received the appo<strong>in</strong>tment of Deputy Marshal <strong>in</strong> i860, and of De|nity<br />

Sheriff for Belknap County <strong>in</strong> 1S72, and was reappo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> 1874. I'nder<br />

the new Constitution he was elected tlie First Sheriff for lielknap ( 'ouniy <strong>in</strong><br />

1S78. and re-elected <strong>in</strong> 1880.<br />

resided <strong>in</strong> the old homestead <strong>in</strong> Gilmanton, N. H.<br />

graduated <strong>in</strong> 1863, from Dartmouth College, N. H. AVhilc a mtmber of col<br />

lege he entered the Union Army and was commissioned First Lieutenant. Oct.<br />

5, 1862, and promoted April 8, 1863, to the Capta<strong>in</strong>cy of Company .A, Fifteenth<br />

Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers. He was at the siege of Port Hudson.<br />

Capt. Cogswell resigned his commission, and was honorably discharged from<br />

the service, -Aug. 13, 1S63. He was a lawyer, and filled various public offices.<br />

He was Selectman, Super<strong>in</strong>tendent of Schools, President of Board of 'J'ru-^tees<br />

of Gilmanton Academy, Representative to the State Legislature <strong>in</strong> 1S71 and<br />

1S72, State Senator <strong>in</strong> 1878, and a member of the Governor's Council. Hon.<br />

Thomas Cogswell succeeded to the management of his father's extensive farm-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terests, and iiad an important and lucrative law practice. Near by his<br />

residence stood, <strong>in</strong> 1884, the former resilience of Gen. Joseph Badger, wliicli<br />

was the first framed house erecteil <strong>in</strong> the town of Gilmanton. N. II.
