Arthur Orcutt Jameson, son of Rev. and Mrs Jameson, was born <strong>in</strong><br />

Concord, N. H. He pursued his studies <strong>in</strong> tiie public schools until fourteen<br />

years of age. In the autumn of 1S73. he entered the Roxbury Lat<strong>in</strong> School<br />

<strong>in</strong> preparation for college. He completed the course <strong>in</strong> four years, and gradu-<br />

ated <strong>in</strong> 1877. hold<strong>in</strong>g the first rank <strong>in</strong> his class. .Always a thoughtful and<br />

conscientious boy, at the age of sixteen years he recognized by his own<br />

public act the consecration which his parents had made of him to the Lord<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>fancy, and Nov. 7. 1875, united with the First Church of Clirist <strong>in</strong> Med-<br />

way, Mass. His character and life as a Christian, comb<strong>in</strong>ed with f<strong>in</strong>e scholar-<br />

ship and great modesty of manner, won respect and made his <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

command<strong>in</strong>g. He was admitted <strong>in</strong> 1877 to Harvard College. On his entrance<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation he received honors <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong>, Greek, and Mathematics, and commenced<br />

his college course, Sept. 27, 1877, At the end of the first year he<br />

was accounted highest <strong>in</strong> rank and awarded the first Detur. At the close of<br />

his college course he received " Summos Bonores <strong>in</strong> L<strong>in</strong>giiis Antiquis" and<br />

graduated the first scholar <strong>in</strong> the class, June 29, 1881. Soon after graduation<br />

he received the appo<strong>in</strong>tment of Teacher of Classics and Mathematics <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Arnold Schocil. New York City. But when about to assume this position,<br />

after a brief illness, he was called to a higher service. He died at the age<br />

of twenty-one years, Sept. 30, 1881. His burial took place <strong>in</strong> Blossom Hill<br />

Cemetery of his native city, Concord, N. H. His last rest<strong>in</strong>g place is a lovely<br />

spot, overlook<strong>in</strong>g the place of his birtli. the church of his childhood, and the<br />

waters of the Merrimac, upon whose banks much of his boyhood was spent.<br />

<strong>The</strong> sad throbb<strong>in</strong>gs of a mother's heart upon the death of her eldest child<br />

and only surviv<strong>in</strong>g son f<strong>in</strong>d expression <strong>in</strong> the l<strong>in</strong>es of the sweet poet, Faber :<br />

II 'ith the soul look<strong>in</strong>g out through his Jounla<strong>in</strong>-like eyes :<br />

" Thou hast honored my child hy the steed of Thy choice.<br />

Thou hast eroviued him with glory, o'er-whclmed him -vith mirlh :<br />

lie s<strong>in</strong>gs up <strong>in</strong> heaven with his sweet-sot<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g voice.<br />

While I, a sa<strong>in</strong>t's mother, am weep<strong>in</strong>g on earth.<br />

" Yet oh for that voice, which is thrill<strong>in</strong>g through heaven.<br />

One moment my ears with its music to slake 1<br />

Oh no : notfor worlds would / have him regiven.<br />

Yet I long to have back '.i'hat J would not retake.<br />

" Go, go with thy God, with thy Saviour, my child'<br />

Thou art His ; lam His: and thy sisters art His<br />

But to-day thyfond mother with sorror,v is wild 1<br />

To th<strong>in</strong>k that her son is an angel <strong>in</strong> hliss .'<br />

" Oh forgi-,-e me, dear Saviour ! on heaven's bright shore<br />

Should J still <strong>in</strong> my childf<strong>in</strong>d a separate joy :<br />

While f lie <strong>in</strong> the light of Thyface evermore.<br />

May I th<strong>in</strong>k heaven brighter because of my boy ? "
