(Johnson) Cogswell, was born Nov. 4, 1799, <strong>in</strong> New Preston, Conn.<br />

He married, June 12, 1S39, Anna Canfii/d Sfa-liiii^, daughter of Gen.<br />

Elisha and Alma (Canfield) Sterl<strong>in</strong>g. She was born Sept. 17, 181 7, <strong>in</strong><br />

Salisbury, Conn. <strong>The</strong>\' resided <strong>in</strong> Jamaica, Long Island, N. Y. .Mrs.<br />

Cogswell died Dec. 16, 18S0.<br />

Edward Worth, [1171] b. July 21 , 1847. He died <strong>in</strong> early life. July 20. 1869.<br />

Em.ma Sterl<strong>in</strong>o, [1172] b. Feb. 23, 1851 : m. April 22, 1874, William S. Canfield.<br />

Ja.mes Henrv, [1173] b. March 18,-1853. He died <strong>in</strong> childhood, Feb. 20, 1856.<br />

Francis Jan\ier, [1174] b. Sept. 19. 1854. He resided, <strong>in</strong> 1884. <strong>in</strong> New York.<br />

William Johnson Cogswell was educated <strong>in</strong> Vale College, but, <strong>in</strong> conse-<br />

quence of his father's death, left college before graduation. He studied law.<br />

and <strong>in</strong> 1835 settled <strong>in</strong> the practice of his profession <strong>in</strong> Jamaica. Queens Co.,<br />

Long Island. N. Y., where be resided until 1874. In 1S53 he transferred his<br />

ofifice to ISrooklyn. and cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> active practice there until 1875. He<br />

was County Judge and Surrogate of Queens Co., N. Y. As a churchman<br />

he was greatly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> the erection of the Diocese of Long Island, and<br />

it was largely ow<strong>in</strong>g to his exertions among ihe parishes of Queens and Suf-<br />

folk Counties that the undertak<strong>in</strong>g was so speedily and successfully accom-<br />

plished. He was a member of the first Stand<strong>in</strong>g Committee, and served <strong>in</strong><br />

that capacity a number of years. He retired from his professional service,<br />

and was liv<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> 1884, at the age of eighty-four years, with his daughter, Mrs.<br />

William S. Canfield, whose residence was 97 East ri6th Street, New York.<br />

Mrs. Cogswell was the daughter of a wealthy farmer of Salisbury, Conn.<br />
