John' Cogswell, son of Edward and Alice Cogswell, was born<br />

1592, <strong>in</strong> Westbury Leigh, County of Wilts, England. He married,<br />

Sept. 10, 161 5, Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Rev. William and<br />

Phillis Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Cogswell resided <strong>in</strong> Westbury until<br />

1635 ; they then emigrated to <strong>America</strong>, and settled <strong>in</strong> Ipswich, Mass.<br />

He died Nov. 29, 1669. She died June 2, 1676.<br />

John Cogswell, the ancestor of the <strong>Cogswells</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>, as already nar-<br />

rated, was the son of Edward and Alice Cogswell, of Westbury Leigh, <strong>in</strong> the<br />

County of Wilts, England. At the age of twenty-three years he married the<br />

daughter of the parish vicar, succeeded to his father's bus<strong>in</strong>ess, and settled<br />

down <strong>in</strong> the old homestead. His parents died soon after his marriage, and he<br />

received by <strong>in</strong>heritance "<strong>The</strong> Mylls called Ripond, situate with<strong>in</strong> the Parish of<br />

Frome Selwood," together with the home place and certa<strong>in</strong> personal property.
