excelled. He had the pleasure, with his associate trustees, of see<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

school, by the generosity and <strong>in</strong>terest of its many friends, placed upon an<br />

endur<strong>in</strong>g foundation. In the great reforms of the last half-century Dr. Cogs-<br />

well gave his <strong>in</strong>fluence by judicious advice and consistent example. He commenced<br />

actixe life with the tempeiance cause, and was an ardent supp Tter<br />

of the anti-slnvcry niovement fn.m the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to the end of that gre;il<br />

controversy.<br />

Dr. Cog.swell was evangelical <strong>in</strong> his religious con\ictions, and never deji.irted<br />

from the Scriptures of his ancestors. In 1S31 he became a member of -.he<br />

rlnnch <strong>in</strong> Bradford, and was always identified with its growth and prosperity.<br />

In 1 860 he assisted <strong>in</strong> form<strong>in</strong>g the Haverhill Montlav Even<strong>in</strong>c Clii:,<br />

which was com])osed of gentlemen of literary tastes, resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Haverhill and<br />

Bradford, for the discussion of literary, scientilic, and social topics. In 1S7S<br />

Dr. Cog-well made his second visit to F.urope, and was at the World's Fair <strong>in</strong><br />

Paris. He <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> his travels tiie mounta<strong>in</strong>s and lakes of Switzerland.<br />

and portions of (Jermany. Belgium, and Holland. He also visited the rural<br />

districts of England. Scotland, and Ireland, giv<strong>in</strong>g much attention to the agri<br />

culiurai capabilities and resources of the countries through which he passed,<br />

and manifest<strong>in</strong>g the same enthusiasm <strong>in</strong> all objects of <strong>in</strong>terest that character-<br />

iz.d his former visit. Amid his multiplied cares and duties, Dr. Cogswell<br />

found time to de\i''i' no little attention to agriculture, and his broad acres on<br />

the sunny slope 1 1 ' Ri\-erside '" gi\e evidence of good cultivation. <strong>The</strong>re,<br />

amid the rural retirement of his country home, he passed the summer months<br />

of his later years, with his family, recei\'<strong>in</strong>g his friends with the cordial grace<br />

of old-time hospitality.<br />

It should not fail of mention, that of those who ha\e generously aided <strong>in</strong><br />

carry<strong>in</strong>g forward to successful issue the work of genealogical research, as<br />

presented <strong>in</strong> this volume, there is no one to whom the author is so largely<br />

<strong>in</strong>debted, for counsel, encouragement, and money, as to Hum. George Cogswell,<br />
