Still at Milford Haven Mr. Matlier speaks of be<strong>in</strong>g "exercised botli ends<br />

of tlie day," "besides," he says, "the day was more comfortable to us all <strong>in</strong><br />

regard to y'' company of many godly Christians from y'' Angel Gabriel, and<br />

from other vessels ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the haven with us, who, want<strong>in</strong>g means and home,<br />

were glad to come to us, and we were also glad of their company, and had all<br />

of us a very comfortable day, and were much refreshed <strong>in</strong> the Lord "<br />

By lack of w<strong>in</strong>d hav<strong>in</strong>g been delayed at Milford Haven for 12 days,<br />

they sailed on June 22, Monday. On the even<strong>in</strong>g of the Tuesday, June 23,<br />

they ''lost sfght of the 3 ships bound for Newfoundland, but the master of<br />

the James thought it best to stay for the Angel Gabriel, be<strong>in</strong>g bound for<br />

New England as wee were, rather than to lea\'e her & go with the other<br />

three.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Angel Gabriel is a strong ship ^: well furnished with fourteene or<br />

si.xteene pieces of ordnance, and therefore our seamen rather desired her<br />

company ; but yet she is slow <strong>in</strong> sail<strong>in</strong>g, and therefore wee \vent sometimes<br />

with three sayles less than wee might have done, y' so we might not overgoe<br />

her."<br />

On Wednesdav, June 24. "We saw abundance of porpuyses leap<strong>in</strong>g &<br />

play<strong>in</strong>g about our shi]5." "And wee spent some lime that day <strong>in</strong> pursu<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

the Angel Gabriel what wee supposed was a Turkish pirate, but could not<br />

overtake her."<br />

Mr. Mather speaks of the Sabbath, June 2S, 1635, and says, "I was<br />

exercised <strong>in</strong> the forenoon, and Mr. Maude <strong>in</strong> the afternoon."<br />

" This e\-e'g wee saw porpuyses about y' ship, and some would fayne<br />

been strik<strong>in</strong>g, but others dissuaded, because of the Sabbath, and so it was<br />

let alone."<br />

<strong>The</strong> next day by se\en o'clock the sailors had a great porpoise on deck.<br />

Mr. Mather says " : <strong>The</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g him haled <strong>in</strong>to the ship like a swyne from<br />

y'' decke <strong>in</strong> viewe of all our company,<br />

y" stye to the tressle, and opened upon<br />

was wonderful to us all. and marvellous merry sport and delightful to our<br />

women & childi-en. So good was oui God unto us <strong>in</strong> afTord<strong>in</strong>g us the day<br />

before, spiritual refresh<strong>in</strong>g to our soules, and y' day morn<strong>in</strong>g also delightful<br />

recreation to our bodyes, at y'' tak<strong>in</strong>g and open<strong>in</strong>g of y' huge and strange fish."<br />

In the afternoon, June 29, "Captayne Taylor went on board y' Angel, and<br />

took Mathew Michel & mee along with li<strong>in</strong>i."<br />

Tliey found that there had been much seasickness on the Angel Gabriel,<br />

and two cases of "small pockes well recovered aga<strong>in</strong>."<br />

"Wee were <strong>in</strong>treated to stay supp, there witli their Master, &c., and had<br />

good cheese, mutton boyled &: rosted. rested turkey, good sacke, &c."<br />

Saturday, July d„ 1635. "This day y' sea was very rough, and we saw<br />

}'* truth of y' Scripture, Ps. cvii. Some were very seasicke, but none could<br />

stand or go upon y' decke because of the toss<strong>in</strong>g & tumbl<strong>in</strong>g of the ship."<br />

"This day (July 4) we lost sight of the Angel sayl<strong>in</strong>g slowly beh<strong>in</strong>d us, and<br />

we never saw her aga<strong>in</strong> any more."<br />

Mr. Mather speaks of Sabbath, Aug. 2. "And y' w<strong>in</strong>d blew with a coole
