June 17, 1-3S, <strong>in</strong> Preston, Conn. He married and resided <strong>in</strong> Sand-<br />

gate, Vt., where he died, 1832, at the age of n<strong>in</strong>ety-four years.<br />

son of Samuel'' [74] and Lydia (Starkweather) Cogswell, was born<br />

March 30, 1740, <strong>in</strong> Preston, Conn. He married Charity . <strong>The</strong>y<br />

resided <strong>in</strong> Southbury, Conn., and <strong>in</strong> Sandgate, Vt. Mr. Cogswell<br />

died, 1S38, at the age of n<strong>in</strong>ety-eight years, <strong>in</strong> Sandgate, Vt., where he<br />

and his wife were buried.<br />

iSoo upon the Land Records of that town. <strong>The</strong>re is the record of the birth of a negro child,<br />

whose mother was a servant of Asa Cogswell, <strong>in</strong> 1793. .-Vsa Cogswell appears as a witness<br />

of Peter Hubbell's will, Feb. 22, 17S0, <strong>in</strong> Xewtown, Conn. He removed to .Sandgate, Vt.,<br />

about iSoo. His sons, .Asa, Ferris, and Mart<strong>in</strong>, went South and West.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> <strong>Cogswells</strong> were a bright and respectable race. 'I'hiy wen- always toiisicl<strong>in</strong>d ilic<br />

' first families ' <strong>in</strong> Sandgate, as they say <strong>in</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia."
