yohi"), son of SanuieP [74] and Lydia (Starkweather) Cogswell, was<br />

born March 5, 1735, <strong>in</strong> Preston, Conn. He married, April 17, 1758,<br />

yane Owen. <strong>The</strong>y resided <strong>in</strong> New Milford, Conn., where he died,<br />

1808.<br />

Edward Cogswell was a drummer <strong>in</strong> the old French and Indian War.<br />

He went to the northward and suffered great privations and hardships, nearly<br />

los<strong>in</strong>g the use of his right hand. In the leisure of the camp he decorated a<br />

powder-horn very beautifully with engrav<strong>in</strong>gs cut with a penknife. This powder-<br />

horn is a rare curiosity. It is <strong>in</strong> the possession of Dr. Niram J.'-* Cogswell<br />

[1720], of Silvara, Pa., who is the great-grandson of Edward Cogswell. This<br />

curious relic is f<strong>in</strong>ely decorated with various qua<strong>in</strong>t figures, and <strong>in</strong>scribed on one<br />

side as follows :<br />
