Joseph Cogswell was one of the earliest settlers of Richmond, where there were but<br />

two wliite families <strong>in</strong> 1761. Mr. Cogswell was admitted to the church <strong>in</strong> South<strong>in</strong>gton Parish,<br />

March 4, 1733, and March 11 had his little daughter baptized. Some give date of his mar-<br />

riage, March 4, 1731, and the date of his death, April 13, 17S3. At his death he left his wife<br />

Joanna and seven children, viz., Elizabeth, Lurana, Rosaniia, Nathaniel, Nathan, Lucy, and<br />

Joseph. Joseph Cogswell [491 ] was the residuary legatee of his father's estate.<br />

Benjam<strong>in</strong> Andrews, Mrs. Cogswell's father, was son of Benjam<strong>in</strong> and Mary (Smith)<br />

Andrews, and Benjam<strong>in</strong> was the youngest child of John and Mary Andrews, who settled, <strong>in</strong><br />

1640, <strong>in</strong> Farm<strong>in</strong>gton, Conn., east side of the river, two miles from the village. "John Andrews<br />

d. 1681. Mary, ye aged wife of John Andrews, died May, 1694."<br />

Benjam<strong>in</strong> Andrews, son of John and Mary Andrews, married, May 26, 1682, Mary Smith.<br />

He died 1727. <strong>The</strong>ir son Benjam<strong>in</strong> was born Aug. 20, 16S3, and married Elizalieth Gridley.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were the parents of Mrs. Cogswell. Mrs. Sarah (Cogswell) Hollistcr [485] may not<br />

have been of this family. She is not mentioned <strong>in</strong> Mr. Cogswell's uiU.<br />

Xathaniel Cogswell [ 488 ] married Beulah Scott, daughter of Zachariah Scott. Slie was<br />

born, 1744, <strong>in</strong> South<strong>in</strong>gton Parish, Conn. <strong>The</strong>y lived <strong>in</strong> Cornwall, Vt., where he purchased<br />

land and built a log-house about 1790.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Will of Joseph Cogswell.<br />

"I.N THE NAME c ,F (iuii, Amen: /, Jpsefli Cogsxcell, <strong>in</strong> the County of Berkshire and<br />

State of Massachusetts, be<strong>in</strong>g through the abundant mercy and goodness of God, though<br />

weak <strong>in</strong> body, yet of sound understand<strong>in</strong>g and memory, do constitute this my last will and<br />

testament.<br />

" First. I most humbly bequeath my soul to God who gave it, and my body I give to the<br />

Earth from whence it was taken, to be burried <strong>in</strong> decent. Christian burial at the discretion of<br />

mv Executors, <strong>in</strong> full assurance of its resurection from thence at the last day.<br />

" To my worldly estate I will, and jiositivly order, that all my debts be paid, and I give<br />

and dispose of what estate rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the manner follow<strong>in</strong>g : That is to say, I give and<br />

bequeath to mv well-beloved wife, Johannah Cogswell, the use and improvement of one third<br />

of my real Estate, and also one third of my Personal Estate, dur<strong>in</strong>g her natural life.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>n I give and bequeath unto my well-beloved sons, Nathaniel Cogswell and Nathan<br />

Cogswell, and unto my well-beloved daughters, Elizabeth Hubbard, Lurana W<strong>in</strong>ston, Kosanah<br />

W<strong>in</strong>ston, and Lucy North, Five Shill<strong>in</strong>gs each.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>n I give and bequeath unto my well-beloved son, Joseph Cogswell, all the rema<strong>in</strong>der<br />

of all my real and personal estate of all k<strong>in</strong>d whatever, and all the estate, both real and<br />

personal, which I have given to my wife by this will, at her decease.<br />

"Lastly, I do constitute and appo<strong>in</strong>t Nathaniel Bishop Sole Executor of this my last will<br />

and testament.<br />
