which alarmed those acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with sanitary science. To them it was clear<br />

that the monotony of daily labor, without wholesome recreation, and especially<br />

when the scene was transferred from the open field to the "store," count<strong>in</strong>g-<br />

house, and office, was seriously affect<strong>in</strong>g the public health, both physical and<br />

moral. To remedy this, a systematic return to the athletic games of the old<br />

countries was sucessfully recommended some quarter of a century ago, and<br />

now the bat, the oar of the amateur, and the volunteer's rifle are familiar among<br />

not only the youthful, but the adult population of New Scotland.<br />

Hezekiah*^ Cogswell, (Smnucl*, Saniuel'-K Jolufi, yohn^), son of<br />

Samuel'' (68! and Mrs. Ann (Denison) Cogswell, Ji'e Masi>n, was born,<br />

1709, <strong>in</strong> Sa^-brook, Conn. He married Susanna Baihy. She was born<br />

<strong>in</strong> Mansfield, Conn. <strong>The</strong>y lived <strong>in</strong> Lebanon and Hebron, Conn., and<br />

<strong>in</strong> Cornwallis, Nova -Scotia. Mrs. Cogswell died at the age of about<br />

n<strong>in</strong>ety years. Mr. Cogswell died at the age of about n<strong>in</strong>ety-seven<br />

years.<br />

Hezekiah Cogswell settled <strong>in</strong> Lebanon, Conn. <strong>The</strong> record of the First<br />

Church <strong>in</strong> that town shows that Hezekiah owned the Covenant, Jan. 2, 1732.<br />

He received a con\-ey.qnce of land Nov. 6, J 731, from his parents, and made<br />

purchase of other land. May 19, 1732, <strong>in</strong> Hebron, Conn., where, from mention<br />

made, it appears he resided <strong>in</strong> 1758. In 1761 Mr. Cogswell with his family<br />

emigrated to Nova Scotia. <strong>The</strong> youngest child was perhaps ten years of age
