1 83 1. Mrs. Cogswell atta<strong>in</strong>ed her n<strong>in</strong>ety-fourth year, and died Sept.<br />

William Cogswell, at the age of twelve years, preparatory to the study<br />

of medic<strong>in</strong>e, was placed under the private <strong>in</strong>struction of his uncle, Rev. Jona-<br />

than Searle, of Mason, N. H. <strong>The</strong> war of the Revolution break<strong>in</strong>g out, he<br />

entered the army, at the age of fifteen years, enlist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the company commanded<br />

by his older brother, Capt. Thomas Cogswell, <strong>in</strong> Col. Baldw<strong>in</strong>'s regi-<br />

ment. Hav<strong>in</strong>g served the term of his enlistment, from Jan. 1, 1776, to Jan i,<br />

1777, he pursued the study of medic<strong>in</strong>e and surgery with Dr. Nathaniel Peabody,<br />

of Atk<strong>in</strong>son, N. H. In 1778 he re-entered the service of his country for<br />

a siiort time, under Gen. Sullivan, of Rhode Island. Hav<strong>in</strong>g completed his<br />

medical studies, he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted, July 19, 1781, Surgeon's Mate <strong>in</strong> the Military<br />

Hospital at West Po<strong>in</strong>t, N. Y. Jan. 5. 1784, he was promoted to the position<br />

of Surgeon-<strong>in</strong>-Chief of the hospital and Chief Medical Officer of the United<br />

States Army, which he filled from June 20, 1784, to Aug., 1785.<br />

Dr. Cogswell<br />

resigned the position of Surgeon-<strong>in</strong>-Chief, Sept. i, 1785, and term<strong>in</strong>ated his<br />

connection with the army, hav<strong>in</strong>g been some five years <strong>in</strong> the service of the<br />

country. He soon after married and settled <strong>in</strong> Atk<strong>in</strong>son, N. H., where he<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> the practice of his profession, for almost half a centur)-, until his<br />

death.<br />

Dr. Cogswell was one of the orig<strong>in</strong>al members of the New Hampshire<br />

Medical Society, which was <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> 1791. He was appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the<br />

General Court one of its n<strong>in</strong>eteen Fellows. Many medical students were under<br />

his <strong>in</strong>struction. He was one of the founders of Atk<strong>in</strong>son Academy, which was<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> 1791, and a member and the President of its Board of Trustees
