Moses Cogswell was <strong>in</strong> the naval ser\'ice for nearly the whole period of<br />

the Revolution. He held the commission of Lieutenant and served as a pri-<br />

vateersman. Lieut. Cogswell was once captured and held as a prisoner of<br />

war at Halifa.x. N. S. It happened to be at the time of the notable Dark Day<br />

<strong>in</strong> New England. In Halifa.x the sun shone brightly all day. and when the<br />

British heard of the event they said, " It was a div<strong>in</strong>e curse upon the rebels.'<br />

Afier the war Lieut. Cogswell settled <strong>in</strong> Canterbury, N. H. He carried on<br />

a farm, kept a tavern, and was Justice of the Peace. Lieut. Cogswell's death<br />

was very sudden, of paralysis. His wife's death occurred exactly three years<br />

after, on tiie same day of the same month.<br />

AVr. and //«. Ahicl I-'oslcr, Mrs. Cogswell's father, was a native of .\ndover, Mass., and<br />

son of Capt. .^sa Foster. He graduated from Harvard College <strong>in</strong> 1756. He was a member<br />

of the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental Congress <strong>in</strong> 1783 and 17S4, and for several terms after the adoption of<br />

the Constitution, 1789-gi, 1795-1S03. He was the only one of the New Hampshire delega<br />

tion to the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental Congress who witnessed the sublime spectacle when the Commander<strong>in</strong>-Chief<br />

of the .\merican -Army delivered up his sword to the .Xnierican Congress. Hon.<br />

Abiel Foster died <strong>in</strong> 1.S06, at the age of seventy-one years.<br />

Xaiuy Cognudt [ 407 ] was the third wife of Chase Wyatt, who was born July 12, 1S05.<br />

He married two of her nieces. <strong>The</strong>y lived <strong>in</strong> Tilton, X. H. He died 1SS2.<br />
