Mr. Cogswell was a mar<strong>in</strong>er. He was out as a privateersman dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

whole period of the Revolution. On one occasion, be<strong>in</strong>g taken a prisoner,<br />

and be<strong>in</strong>g displeased with the treatment he received from the enemy, he jumped<br />

overboard and swam some three miles to ga<strong>in</strong> an <strong>America</strong>n vessel <strong>in</strong> sight.<br />

He was picked up <strong>in</strong> an exhausted condition and brought safely home. When<br />

the war was over he still followed the seas for some years as a capta<strong>in</strong> of a<br />

merchant vissel. Near the close of his life he settled upon a farm <strong>in</strong> Dover,<br />

N. H , where he spent the rema<strong>in</strong>der of his days.<br />

Nathaniel'' [45] and Judith (Badger) Cogswell, was born Sept. 22, 1757,<br />

<strong>in</strong> Haverhill, Mass. He married, June 13, 17S1, Hannah Foster, daugh-<br />

ter of Rev and Hon. Abiel and Hannah (Badger) Foster, and grand-<br />

daughter of Gen. Joseph and Hannah (Pearson) Badger. She was born<br />

<strong>in</strong> Canterbur}', \. H., where they resided. Lieut. Moses Cogswell<br />

died Sept. 16, 181 1 Mrs Cogswell died Sept. 16, 1814.<br />
