This volume is simple <strong>in</strong> its arrangement, and by a copious Index its con-<br />

tents are made easily available.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Preface is followed by an Introduction, <strong>in</strong> which is mention of the<br />

<strong>Cogswells</strong> <strong>in</strong> England, and some account of their passage on the ocean lo<br />

\ this country <strong>in</strong> 1635. <strong>The</strong> body of the work gives a record of the <strong>Cogswells</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong> <strong>in</strong> ten generations, occupy<strong>in</strong>g six hundred and thirty-one pages,<br />

exclusive of twenty-n<strong>in</strong>e steel engrav<strong>in</strong>gs. <strong>The</strong>re is added a Supplementa of<br />

additional data, and of Cogsw^ells whose l<strong>in</strong>eage is unknown. <strong>The</strong>n follows an<br />

Errata, and the volume concludes with a threefold Index.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Index refers to the numerical position of the names, and to the page<br />

of persons and th<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>in</strong>cidental <strong>in</strong>terest and mention. <strong>The</strong> abbreviations<br />

used are those common to sucii works.<br />

<strong>The</strong> edition is limited to five hundred copies, nearly all of which are sub-<br />

scried for prior to publication.<br />
