LvJici Coi^swcl/ was his second wife. <strong>The</strong> name of his fiist wife was Cleaves. Bv<br />

this marriage there was one son, John Cleaves .Symnies. who married .\nna Tuthill, daughter<br />

of Henry Tuthill, Esq. He was a commander of cavalry <strong>in</strong> the war of the Revolution, and<br />

subsequently Judge of the .Supreme Court of N'ew Jersey.<br />

NoH. John C. Syiiimes, Oct. 15, 1788, received from the United States government a<br />

million acres of land <strong>in</strong> Ohio. This grant <strong>in</strong>cluded the present site of C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati. He<br />

removed to Ohio, and was appo<strong>in</strong>ted by President Wash<strong>in</strong>gton United .States District Judge<br />

of the " Northwestern Territory." His residence was at North Bend, and was named<br />

" Cleaves." He died Feb., 1814.<br />

Anna Symmi-s, the daugfiter of Hon. John C. and .\nna (Tuthill) Symmes, lived much<br />

with her grandfather, Henry Tuthill, Esq. She was educated at East Hampton, Ma.ss. Miss<br />

Symmes was a young lady of culture and many personal charms. This granddaughter of<br />

Rev. Timothy Symmes, who married ''Lydia CogrMcU, received the attentions of a young<br />

officer of the United States Army, then <strong>in</strong> command of Fort Hamilton, whom she married,<br />

Nov. 22, 1795. This gallant young otticer who won the hand of the beautiful ;\nna Symmes<br />

subsequently became well known. His jwrtrait on the preced<strong>in</strong>g jjagc will be readily<br />

recognized.<br />
