erett, F. R. S.. president of Harvard College from 1708 to 1724, and granddaughter of Clov.<br />

John Leverett, governor of Massachusetts from 1673 to 1679.<br />

Kr.: John IVisc, grandfather of Mrs. Cogswell, was the first settled pastor of the church<br />

<strong>in</strong> Chebacco Parish. He was born Aug., 1652, <strong>in</strong> Koxbury, Mass. ; graduated from Harvard<br />

College <strong>in</strong> 1673; settled over the church <strong>in</strong> Chebacco Parish, Aug. 12, 16S3, where he cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

<strong>in</strong> office until his death, April S, 1725. Rev. Mr. Wise has been described as "a man<br />

of majestic aspect and great bodily strength ; resembled Wash<strong>in</strong>gton." He was the first ni.<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong> known to have opposed the idea of " ta.\ation without representation." This<br />

he did oppose a hundred years before the Revolution, and publicly <strong>in</strong>structed his people to<br />

resist taxes levied under Sir Edmund Andros, for which he was imprisoned -Aug., 1687, and<br />

sentenced to pay a heavy f<strong>in</strong>e. A monument marks the grave of Rev. John Wise, <strong>in</strong> the<br />

centre of the churchyard, and bears this <strong>in</strong>scription :<br />

" Underneath Lies the Body of the<br />

REV. JOHN WISE, A. M.,<br />

First Pastor of the Second Church <strong>in</strong> Ipswich ;<br />

Graduated at Harvard College <strong>in</strong> 1673:<br />

Orda<strong>in</strong>ed Pastor of said Church <strong>in</strong> 1681<br />

And died April 8th, 1725,<br />

Aged 73.<br />

He shone as a star of the<br />

First Magnitude."<br />

John-' Cogswell, {Francis^ yonathan\ Williani^, John^), son of<br />

Francis-" 135] and Elizabeth (Rogers) Cogswejl, was born Sept. 17,<br />

1738, <strong>in</strong> Ipswich, Mass. He married Sarah <strong>The</strong>y resided <strong>in</strong><br />

Boston, Mass. Mr. Cogswell died Jan., 181S, at the age of eighty<br />

years.<br />
