Marcus Aurelius, and other Roman emperors. <strong>The</strong> name is of Saxon<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong>tended to designate the importance or the relative position of the<br />

town. Here, accord<strong>in</strong>g to tradition, was the Palace that belonged to the West<br />

S.^XON K<strong>in</strong>gs. <strong>The</strong>re are three pr<strong>in</strong>cipal streets, irregularly built, branch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

off toward Frome, Ijradford, and East Sav<strong>in</strong>gton. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants are sup-<br />

plied with water from spr<strong>in</strong>gs and a small stream that falls <strong>in</strong>to the Avon.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g trade formerly flourished here, one house alone employ<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

Bryan Edwards, the liistorian, and Dr. Philip Withers, a writer of some<br />

em<strong>in</strong>ence, were natives of \\'eslbury.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Westburv Parish Chitrch.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Westbury Parish Church dates to the time of William the Conqueror,<br />

who reigned from Dec. 25, 1066, to Sept. 9, 1087. A new church edifice was<br />

erected <strong>in</strong> 1315, dur<strong>in</strong>g the reign of Edward II., which was still stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

1884. as here represented. This f<strong>in</strong>e Gothic structure, nearly six hundred<br />

years old, was built <strong>in</strong> the form of a cross. <strong>The</strong> nave was seventy-n<strong>in</strong>e feet<br />

long and twenty-six feet wide. <strong>The</strong> transept was seventy-seven feet long<br />

and sixteen feet wide. <strong>The</strong> chancel was forty-eight feet b\- twenty-four feet.<br />

<strong>The</strong> height of nave was forty feet. <strong>The</strong> height of chancel was twenty-six<br />

feet. <strong>The</strong> height of the tower was eighty-four feet from the ground. <strong>The</strong>
