aged 16 years <strong>and</strong> 5 months."*<br />

JOHN (48), fifth child <strong>and</strong> second son <strong>of</strong> Matthew <strong>and</strong> Phoebe<br />

(Hyde) Griswold, through whom descends the Blackball branch <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Griswold family, was born December 22, 1690; married, June 23, 1713,<br />

Hannah Lee, his step-sister (by his father's second marriage, to Mrs. Mary<br />

Lee—see above, <strong>and</strong> JJLitt)^ who died May 11, 1773; <strong>and</strong> died Septem-<br />

ber 22, 1764. His gravestone in the Duck River Burying-Ground at<br />

Lyme reads as follows :<br />

" Sacred to the Memory <strong>of</strong> John Griswold, who, after having sustained the<br />

Public <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> Justice <strong>of</strong> the peace <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> the quorum for many years, departed<br />

this life September 22°", 1764, in the 74"' year <strong>of</strong> his age ;"<br />

<strong>and</strong> in a note to a funeral sermon, preached on his daughter Phoebe's<br />

death, it is said that he "was not only a Gentleman <strong>of</strong> great wealth ; but<br />

also was much beloved <strong>and</strong> esteemed by his townsmen <strong>and</strong> acquaintance<br />

for his superior wisdom <strong>and</strong> integrity." He is known in the family as<br />

*' The birth-months <strong>of</strong> Thomas <strong>and</strong> Samuel are determined by inscriptions on their gravestones in<br />

the Duck River Burying-Ground at Lyme. A draft <strong>of</strong> a Will <strong>of</strong> Thomas, made when he was " very<br />

sick <strong>and</strong> weak in body," is dated 1716.<br />
