" He was a Grave, Judicious <strong>and</strong> Godly Divine, very Laborious <strong>and</strong> Successful<br />

in his ministry ; he was a Branch <strong>of</strong> an Honorable family in y^ town ; Early under<br />

very Serious Impressions <strong>of</strong> Religion, <strong>and</strong> Received a Remarkable Change by the<br />

Grace <strong>of</strong> God, about y= i5"> or i6"> Year <strong>of</strong> his Age, which is supposed the Begin-<br />

ning <strong>of</strong> the Divine Life in his Soul. Thenceforward it was y"* reigning Care, <strong>and</strong><br />

Business <strong>and</strong> Pleasure <strong>of</strong> his Life, to Serve God, <strong>and</strong> do Good to mankind. He had<br />

early a thirst for Learning, which was now increased in him, <strong>and</strong> was gratified in a<br />

Liberal Education, by which he prepared for y"^ Great Work for which he was de-<br />

signed <strong>of</strong> God. He entered the Ministry under various Discouragements, but was<br />

engaged to undertake it from an animating Love to God, to immortal Souls, <strong>and</strong> to<br />

y= Sacred Work, which <strong>of</strong> Choice he preferred to any <strong>of</strong> y'' Imployments <strong>of</strong> this<br />

World. He was very vigilant <strong>and</strong> Diligent <strong>and</strong> Laborious in fulfilling his Ministry<br />

among the People <strong>of</strong> his Charge <strong>and</strong> to y^ Nehantick Indians, whom he had y'' Care<br />

<strong>of</strong> for many years. The Chief Subjects <strong>of</strong> his Preaching were y^ great Doctrines <strong>of</strong><br />

y' glorious Gospel ;<br />

his Manner was plain <strong>and</strong> Solemn, <strong>and</strong> his evident Aim to win<br />

Souls, <strong>and</strong> to direct <strong>and</strong> engage to Christian Practice ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> his Labours were Blessed<br />

<strong>of</strong> God to y« Good <strong>of</strong> Many. He was an excellent Christian <strong>of</strong> y'^ Primitive Stamp,<br />

<strong>of</strong> great humility <strong>and</strong> Guileless Integrity in his Walk before God <strong>and</strong> Man, a lover<br />

<strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> good men, fervent in his Devotions, given to hospitality, <strong>and</strong> very exem-<br />

plary in all Christian Duties, both relative <strong>and</strong> Personal, as a husb<strong>and</strong>. Parent,<br />

Neighbour, friend, a Shining Example to y« Believers, in Word <strong>and</strong> Doctrine, in<br />

Conversation <strong>and</strong> Charity, in Spirit, faith <strong>and</strong> Godliness, Purity, Peaceableness,<br />

Righteousness <strong>and</strong> every Good Work. Extremely temperate in all things, <strong>of</strong><br />

eminent Patience <strong>and</strong> Meekness, which shone out in him, with an amiable Lustre, in<br />

the Severe <strong>and</strong> long trials with which it pleased God to exercise him, especially for<br />

many latter years <strong>of</strong> his Ministry ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> in his Last Illness Christ was all his depend-<br />

ence, <strong>and</strong> had much Peace <strong>and</strong> comfort in believing, to y^ Last.<br />

"A well adapted Sermon was preached at his funeral By y« Rev"* Mr. Jewett to a<br />

large <strong>and</strong> afflicted Auditory, from John i. 47, ' ' Behold<br />

etc."<br />

He died October 14, 1761. By his marriage to Hannah Lynde he<br />

had two sons, George^ <strong>and</strong> Sylvamis^ (afterwards Rev. Sylvanus), <strong>and</strong><br />

two daughters ; by<br />

Elizabeth Lee he had the same number <strong>of</strong> children,<br />

again divided equally between sons <strong>and</strong> daughters ; his two younger sons<br />

were Samuel^ <strong>and</strong> Andrew.^ His daughter Elizabeth,^ by the first mar-<br />

riage, married John Raymond <strong>of</strong> Montville, Conn., <strong>and</strong> became the<br />
