By his second marriage, to Mary (Gardiner) Blague, Rev. Stephen<br />

Johnson had two children :<br />

116 I. Mary,^ born August 9, 1768; who married Rev. Matthew Noyes<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Lyme family <strong>of</strong> that name, who was settled at Northford, Conn.<br />

He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Corporation <strong>of</strong> Yale College, stood high in the<br />

ministry <strong>and</strong> had a large property. He died September 25, 1839, ^g^^<br />

seventy-six; she died September i, 185 1, aged eighty-three.<br />

" Aunt Noyes," as she has been always called in the family, was a<br />

marked person in her generation, though she is only remembered in her<br />

later years. She was a fine, energetic, resolute, active woman, intelligent,<br />

with a wise knowledge <strong>of</strong> human nature, kind, generous, hospitable.<br />

Surviving her husb<strong>and</strong> for several years, <strong>and</strong> their only child having died<br />

early, she left most <strong>of</strong> her property to religious objects. After her death<br />

were found all the treasures <strong>of</strong> her daughter, her white satin shoes, fans,<br />

little trinkets &c., &c., which the fond mother had collected <strong>and</strong> saved for<br />

thirty-five years. By her directions they were to be sold for a missionary<br />

society. The administrators called in the friends for consultation. "What<br />

could be done with them, they were <strong>of</strong> so little value l" Nobody knows<br />

what became <strong>of</strong> the precious hoard !<br />

117 They had one child, Mary Ann,^ who died <strong>of</strong> consumption, June<br />

19, 1 81 6, at the age <strong>of</strong> twenty. On her gravestone is this inscription :<br />

" She was admired for her talents, <strong>and</strong> beloved for her virtues, <strong>and</strong> met<br />

death with serenity <strong>and</strong> christian resignation, cheerfully<br />

relinquishing her brightest earthly prospects<br />

in hope <strong>of</strong> a glorious resurrection."<br />

In most families there is some "flower" the memory <strong>of</strong> which is not<br />

allowed to fade with the passing years. More than usual interest lingers<br />

in the minds <strong>of</strong> those who remember Mary Ann Noyes. They represent<br />
