"He was graduated at Yale College in 1728, <strong>and</strong> became '<br />

one <strong>of</strong><br />

these giants <strong>of</strong> the law in New Jersey.' From 1772 to 1776 he was a<br />

Judge <strong>of</strong> the Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> New Jersey. At the breaking out <strong>of</strong> the<br />

War Mr. Ogden went to New York, <strong>and</strong> became a very active loyalist,<br />

Member <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Refugees 1779. His correspondence with<br />

Galloway, the Pennsylvania loyalist, evinces great bitterness against the<br />

Americans, or '<br />

rebels.' He drew up a plan <strong>of</strong> government for the colonies<br />

after their subjection by Great Britain, which he said was '<br />

sure to take<br />

place soon.' The Upper House was to be a House <strong>of</strong> Lords, <strong>and</strong> Barons<br />

were to be created to fill it. After peace had been declared, he went to<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong>, to urge the claims <strong>of</strong> the loyalists whose property had been con-<br />

fiscated by the Americans. His own property had been confiscated, <strong>and</strong><br />

he was remunerated by the British Government 1 790. He returned to the<br />

United States, <strong>and</strong> settled in Queens co., L. I., where he lived until he<br />

died. . . . His<br />
