chant in Canton, China, <strong>and</strong> very extensively mixed up in businesstransactions<br />

with the late John Jacob Astor.' "*<br />

2. Samuel Gouverne^ir^ (d. i860).<br />

" ' For a number <strong>of</strong> years [after 1800] his name was prominent in the<br />

community as that <strong>of</strong> a successful merchant. He was the capitalist <strong>of</strong> the<br />

celebrated Mir<strong>and</strong>a expedition, which was designed to liberate South<br />

America. Col. Smith (the son-in-law <strong>of</strong> President Adams) <strong>and</strong> Mr. Ogden<br />

were prosecuted for having fitted out an expedition against a power in<br />

amity with the United States. The trial was a highly interesting one.<br />

Thomas Addis Emmett, Cadwallader D. Colden, Josiah Ogden H<strong>of</strong>fman<br />

<strong>and</strong> Richard Harrison were their counsel. The defendants were honorably<br />

acquitted. Although this expedition failed, it was the first blow struck for<br />

liberty, <strong>and</strong> led to the subsequent independence <strong>of</strong> South America. Bolivar<br />

himself made this declaration, <strong>and</strong> expressed a readiness to compensate<br />

Mr. Ogden for his heavy losses.' "^ After this failure " ' Mr. Ogden con-<br />

tinued on in his business in the city <strong>of</strong> New York, for some years . .<br />

when he went to France, <strong>and</strong> established himself in commercial business at<br />

Bordeaux. . . . He left Bordeaux for New York in 1825, <strong>and</strong> became<br />

agent for several large houses in France. . . . His private residence<br />

was at No. 41 Warren Street, a large house, where he entertained in the<br />

most magnificent style.' "*'<br />

Samuel Gouverneur Ogden married :<br />

first, Eliza " daughter <strong>of</strong> Francis<br />

Lewis, <strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>daughter <strong>of</strong> the Signer <strong>of</strong> the Declaration <strong>of</strong> that name ;<br />

<strong>and</strong>, secondly, Julia daughter <strong>of</strong> Major James Fairlie, a distinguished <strong>of</strong>ficer<br />

in the Revolutionary army."<br />

By his first marriage he had: (i.) Charlotte Seton ;'^ who married :<br />

first, Lewis Yates; <strong>and</strong>, secondly, Isidore Guillet ; (2.) Samuel Gouverneur'^<br />

(b. 1804, d. 1877); who married Louisa M. Hemmeken<br />
