<strong>of</strong> all the family-papers preserved by several generations <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Griswolds <strong>of</strong> Blackball ; together with some interesting original<br />

papers <strong>of</strong> Rev. George Griswold <strong>of</strong> Giant's Neck, now owned by Deacon<br />

George Griswold <strong>of</strong> Niantic ; <strong>and</strong> with some notes for family-history by<br />

James Griswold Esq. <strong>of</strong> Lyme.<br />

We have also had several valuable documents copied for us from<br />

the Probate Records <strong>of</strong> New London <strong>and</strong> the State Archives at Hart-<br />

ford, the latter through the courtesy <strong>of</strong> Charles J. Hoadly Esq., State<br />

Librarian. An examination <strong>of</strong> the collections on the Griswold family<br />

made by the late Rev. F. W. Chapman <strong>of</strong> Rocky Hill, Conn., which<br />

were put into our h<strong>and</strong>s by his son Mr. Henry A. Chapman <strong>of</strong> Hartford,<br />

has led to one important discovery ;<br />

father have given us some valuable hints.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the statements respecting Edward Griswold <strong>and</strong> his descend-<br />

ants were furnished by Judge S. O. Griswold <strong>of</strong> Clevel<strong>and</strong>, Ohio, <strong>and</strong><br />

the late Hon. William H. Buell <strong>of</strong> Clinton, Conn., descended from him.<br />

The printed sources <strong>of</strong> information, so far as known, have been,<br />

<strong>of</strong> course, freely drawn upon.<br />

It must be understood, however, that we have not undertaken to<br />

write a complete genealogy <strong>of</strong> the Griswolds ; this monograph has<br />

reference, especially, to the male line, <strong>and</strong> to those <strong>of</strong> the name most<br />

closely associated with Lyme.<br />

The earliest English settlements on the Connecticut River were<br />

nearly contemporaneous, <strong>of</strong> the same parentage, being all <strong>of</strong>fshoots from<br />

the Bay Plantation, <strong>and</strong> bound together by many ties <strong>of</strong> intercourse <strong>and</strong>
