In 1827, according to a usage now antiquated <strong>and</strong> always barbaric,<br />

Gov. Ogden, having been bankrupted by no fault <strong>of</strong> his, was thrown into<br />

prison for debt. Meanwhile came the national holiday <strong>of</strong> Feb. 22, when<br />

the patriot contrived to throw out a national flag between the bars <strong>of</strong> his<br />

prison, together with the placard " Blood <strong>and</strong> Thunder !<br />

Is this Liberty ?"<br />

After the military review <strong>of</strong> the day, a Captain <strong>of</strong> militia, by permission,<br />

marched his company into the prison, to salute the ex-Governor <strong>and</strong> old<br />

soldier <strong>of</strong> freedom—which was done, while the people shouted outside.<br />

The injured captive was soon afterward released.<br />

Gov. Aaron (259) Ogden married, in 1787, Elizabeth daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Judge John Chetwood <strong>of</strong> Elizabethtown, N. J.; <strong>and</strong> had by her :<br />

Jersey ; Associate Justice <strong>of</strong> the Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> New Jersey 1848 to<br />

1865; who died at Elizabethtown 24 Feb'y 1865. He was a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the Protestant Episcopal Church, an active influential member <strong>of</strong> its Con-<br />

ventions, <strong>and</strong> a Trustee <strong>of</strong> the College at Burlington."<br />
