Barber <strong>of</strong> Elizabethtown, N. J.; <strong>and</strong> died, without children, in 1773.<br />

"'Colonel Francis Barber was born at Princeton in 1751, <strong>and</strong> was<br />

educated at the College <strong>of</strong> New Jersey. He was installed Rector <strong>of</strong> an<br />

academic institution connected with the First Presbyterian Church at<br />

Elizabethtown, in which situation he remained until the commencement <strong>of</strong><br />

the Revolution. Pie joined the patriot-army, <strong>and</strong> in 1776 was commis-<br />

sioned by Congress a Major <strong>of</strong> the Third Battalion <strong>of</strong> New Jersey troops<br />

at the close <strong>of</strong> the year was appointed Lieut. Colonel, <strong>and</strong> subsequently<br />

became Assistant Inspector-General under Baron Steuben. He was in<br />

constant service during the whole war, was in the principal battles, <strong>and</strong> was<br />
