To those who knew Mrs. Doremus only in later life it seemed almost incredible that a fragile woman, suffering from delicate health and the infirmities of age, could not only conceive, but personally execute, works of charity of a magnitude to tax even the powers of a strong man ; but the Master whose work she was on gave her the strength to accomplish her labors for the benefit of suffering mankind. Of her warm and generous heart, of her private virtues, this is not the place to speak ; they are enshrined in the hearts of her children, and of hundreds who have cause to bless her memory. " A beautiful mural tablet has been erected to her in the South Reformed Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, which is the only tablet which has ever been erected to a lady by any church of this denomination.
